Actually, in this particular instance, I was trying to boot from CD-ROM. 
All it takes is a flaky drive, a less-than-cared-for disc, or just 
impatience after inserting same, and you're (Aggh!) booting Windows again.

Certainly, if there's a single way of setting up a USB drive so that it 
will boot on any PC, or even just the PCs I own, I've yet to find it.
