For opinions, I believe I prefer the comment by Marlor focused by this

A small number of secretive developers, such as 1 or 2, decided/needed 
to stop developing/supporting that project, which in and of itself made 
it 'insecure' (even if not /this/ instant, potentially so in the next 
second, hour, day, week), so 'he' made the announcement, "I'm done (no 
longer working here defending your data), don't use this anymore.'
