I'm reminded of the time when (for some reason) the art director was invited to define the cloud during a company meeting, and he came up with something like: "the cloud is a load of computers on the internet". I've found Dropbox to be a convenient way to replicate low-sensitivity data across 3 or 4 local machines, but I think Jason Scott is basically correct&emdash;if someone's storing your data for you with no expectation of payment, they're not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. They're probably mining your data and selling your 'profile' to advertising companies or something of that nature. And marketing types do seem a little too keen to hype it these days, although I suppose that's just until the next hot new thing comes along… "The cloud&emdash;because your data is worth every penny you're paying to back it up…" -- -- "Make use of a lover or white-noise machine inside your master bedroom to assist you in drifting off to sleep."
