At the risk of shocking you-all to tears of laughter, I must confess
I don't own a printer. At school, there were printers everywhere
so it wasn't really a problem. And then when my life collapsed
(really bad break-up) I fled computers entirely for about five years.
Since then, previewing with ghostscript has been sufficient for
most of my needs (Thank God for Ghostscipt [and L.P.Deutsch
and Ken and everybody else] !)

Now I want one. "ps2pdf, mount /dev/usb1, cp, umount,
hoof-it-to-OfficeMax" is getting a little tiresome as a printing
procedure.

So is there a reasonably-priced Postscript printer for the
anti-social, super-genius, not-very-humble, postscript hacker?

I'm tempted to get a classic, like an old Laserwriter, or an
HP-4si (fond memories from school). But all the new stuff
seems to be PCL-only in the low-budget range. I browsed
through OfficeMax today and couldn't find Postscript
anywhere! Searching Amazon is a mess. EBay is scary.

Friends? Help?!

Any printer that comes with a driver for your OS will print for you,
even if it's again a matter of printing through AcroRead after a ps2pdf.

I think of a PCL printer's driver as a ps2pcl routine, an Epson printer's
driver as a ps2Epson routine, etc -- so just get *any* cheap printer,
a Brother, for example, and let 'er rip :-) . Or, investigate which of
today's cheaper HP printers include ps emulation in their firmware, and
get one of those. [Not "today's", and not "cheap", but the old 4500 CLJ
did that; "today's", but still not exactly "cheap", so does the CP2025).
Or put your ps on the thumbdrive directly, and hoof it to your friendly
neighborhood campus, for running off in a printer lab.

HTH. And cheers, -- tlvp

I may end up going with PCL; but I have pipe dreams up hacking-up
something
like LaserTalk, if I can ever find docs for it. That wouldn't be
possible
without bona fide postscript.

Besides it's just awesome to have a programmable periferal:
Sutherland's
rule run amok: the Laserwriter had more power than the Mac Plus!

http://www.openprinting.org/driver/Postscript/

lists 971 Postscript printers. I'm sure some of them are
reasonably-priced. Have you decided whether you want color, duplex
printing, wireless access, ... ?

Well, if you don't mind the odd quirk (ie breaks at times on acroreader,
but works on xpdf) you could look at the Brother HL-5350DN etc BRscript
range. $300-400, duplexer and networking included.

And? What PostScript printer did you buy? And has it lasted for five years?

Actually, I finally bought one a few weeks ago. Haven't
unboxed it yet. It contains a clone but I'm not sure which one it is.

HP LaserJet Pro M402dn
~$500 USD

Mine is a HP LaserJet 4MP, still working perfectly, nearly 20 years now
and I can still get the cartridges.

Slow, of course...
I had a nice little mandelbrot-set which took 24 hours to print :-)

Regards, Peter
