Hello All!

I am trying to create an image using PS, but starting everything from scratch takes too long. May I ask if there's an available library for commonly used procedures for that that is open source or free?

Thank you so much for your help!

I was trying to create a useful answer for you using English, but starting
without knowing anything about the sort of image you want to create is too
onerous. May I ask if any of the boilerplate images in the libraries that
MS or Apple provide (Office images, icon images, favicon images) might come
in handy? If so, edit away, then Print to PS. Thanks. HTH. Cheers, -- tlvp

I am trying to be able to convert a certain file to PS. Like for example this file has a rectangle in it, I would like to extract its data and retrieve the length, width and color. I want to use these data to be able to interpret or convert into PS file. And to make the conversion faster, a library would be a better option than creating everything from scratch. I would like to ask if there's an available libray that I can use?

I've searched PSLib is one, but so far it says it works on Ubuntu. I still have to try if it works in Windows PC. Can I use it in windows PC? Do you have any better suggestion?

Thank you so much! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry: "a certain file" -- is that a text file, with a mathematician's
description of a rectangle? or a jpg file, containing the graphical data
recorded in a photograph of a physical rectangle? or a programmer's file
(in GW-Basic, perhaps, or Pascal) giving commands for drawing a rectangle?
Or perhaps an SVG file, with a depiction of a rectangle?

The methods for trying "to convert ... to PS" will be very different, tout
selon le cas. Perhaps you might do well to consult the Adobe Blue Book
(Charles Geschke's {PostScript Language Tutorial and Cookbook}). for
explicit directions on constructing rectangles, and much more, /ab initio/.

(One edition bears ISBN: 0-201-10179-3, FWTW.) HTH. Cheers, -- tlvp

I've already read half of the Blue book. I know the basics. But I want to know if there's an available library that I can use to create a PS file let's say I would like to create a program that would convert a PDF file to it's equivalent PS. How can I easily do that? I don't want to do the creation of shapes from scratch. Is there a library that I can use to make the programming faster?

Ah, now *that* I can help you with, at least on a Windows system. Simply
print that PDF to a PostScript printer (e.g., to an HP 8500 Color LaserJet
in PS mode) -- being sure to check the "Print to file" check-box in the
Print dialogue (so print to it, as they say, on the port FILE). The
resulting file will be a PS rendition of your original PDF file.

Others here may well point out that there are pdf2ps utilities available
for other OS scenarios -- google will, too -- but I've never used any of
those and, apart from encouraging you to try, can offer no useful advice.

How about PSLib library for PostScript programming? Any idea how to use it or install it in Windows environment?

Thank you again for your help!

A pdf2ps utility is included as part of
Ghostscript. This is available on several
OSs, *including* Windows. Here is the Usage
line from version 8.60:

Usage: pdf2ps [-dASCII85DecodePages=false] [-dLanguageLevel=n] input.pdf
output.ps

The latest stable release is 9.21 released
on March 16, 2017.

I will look into it. I am not that familiar with GhostScript for now. Thank you for your help!

Forgot about online converters; all you
need is a Web browser. This is really
useful if you only have a handful of files
to convert, and they don't contain anything
confidential.

The one above does the job using Ghostscript.
An alternative website, which can convert
pretty much anything to anything, is:

The xpdf utilities from FooLabs are very good, small and efficient.
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/download.html

Includes
pdftops [options] [PDF-file [PS-file]]

DESCRIPTION
Pdftops reads the PDF file, PDF-file, and writes a PostScript file, PS-
file. If PS-file is not specified, pdftops converts file.pdf to
file.ps (or file.eps with the -eps option). If PS-file is '-', the
       PostScript is sent to stdout.
