I've created eps file which perfectly open on win/linux using ghostview application but it fails on mac using default preview app.
Error on mac: 'The postscript file 'foo.eps' could not be converted to a PDF file'
Investigation:
This problem seems to be happen only with certain conditions
1) 'makepattern' command in eps file
2) for pattern 'XStep' and 'YStep' values are less than 0.08.
Example,
======================================
<<
/PatternType 1
/PaintType 1
/TilingType 3
% Case:1 original values fails
/XStep 0.003234863281
/YStep 0.004150390625
% Case:2 modified values works
% /XStep 0.08323486328125
% /YStep 0.084150390625
/BBox [72.99698638916016 287.1761779785156 73.0002212524414 287.1803283691406]
/PaintProc
{
pop
72.99698638916016 287.1761779785156 translate
0.00323486328125 0.004150390625 scale
1 1 8 matrix
{<

>} false 3 colorimage
} bind
>>
matrix
makepattern

* As mentioned in above snippet, in Case:1, original values of XStep and YStep which are less then 0.08, make fails to open file on mac machine using preview app.
* As mentioned in Case:2, if I change original values to above 0.08 will open file without any error.
* Any idea on this behavior of Mac preview app???

Apple's preview app is a handy tool for viewing several flavours of graphic files but it isn't a full featured PostScript RIP. When it fails just use a more robust viewer, i.e. in this case use Ghostscript. -- -- Rod -- rodd(at)polylogics(dot)com
