In alt.os.linux.slackware there was a recent thread about video editors
which then digressed into making animated gifs out of multipage
postscript files. With three people participating and using a sample
file that has 100 pages, this ended up being the fasted conversion
method:

    gs -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=png256 -dBATCH -sOutputFile=- decofweek.ps | \
    convert -loop 0 -delay 0 \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- png:- \
       multi.gif

Source file: http://www.forkosh.com/decorative/decofweek.ps

Some comments:
DEVICE=png256 was selected because GIF are limited to 256 colors
anyway and it was faster to limit the output than to "print" full
color and resample down. On grayscale output I find pgmraw produces
    better looking output than png256.

OutputFile=- send everything to STDOUT to avoid disk delay, this
makes for a awkward "convert" command line, but no temp files to
clean up and at least twice as fast in our tests.

-loop 0 means "loop forever" in the context of Imagemagick and
    animated GIFs.

-delay 0 means "fast as possible", the native unit of delay time for
GIFs is hundredths of a second, so 4 or 5 for typical movie frame
    rates.

One "-" per input image, to let convert know how many to expect, and
each "-" preceeded with the filetype ("png:") because convert isn't
so greate at identifying them otherwise.

multi.gif is the final output file, by virtue of being named last on
    the convert command line.

Prior to this exercise, I had not seriously considered postscript as a
language for animations, but now I'm intrigued.

In 2008 I used 242 lines of PostScript to define a sequence of images about Möbius transformations, distilled into a PDF, and converted to a GIF animation via GraphicConverter.

Five megs each.

Hi,

Rather nice. Thank you for sharing. I have made some GIF
animations using PostScript (Ghostscript). I saved some
space in mine by limiting the color palette to 8 or 16 colors.

Regards,

Steve N.

In which case I'd better share code.

And I'd also like to take this additional opportunity
to again thank Gernot Hoffmann for his help with the
ps programming to create the above file, provided
several years ago in several threads in this same ng.

Anyone interested in this stuff might want to read the original thread
in comp.os.linux where these comments are elaborated in more detail.
