Working on xpost's font module, my collaborator Vincent Torri added support in the 'show' operator for automatically kerning if the necessary tables are present in the font file. I haven't found anything in the plrm about doing this, but I don't want to remove obvious features that are written and working. Would it be appropriate to control this with a variable in the font dictionary? Something like

  /AutoKern Boolean

? Do any other interpreters (particularly ghostscript) offer the capability to automatically kern the text drawn by 'show'?

The Gonzo utilities are not a Postscript interpreter, nor
do they read kerning tables from the font definition.

For one thing, the Gonzo utilities are not a Postscript interpreter
(which luser-droog was asking about) but a collection of Postscript
functions which are executed within a Postscript interpreter.

For another thing, from what I can see, Gonzo does not read any
kerning hints from the font (which luser-droog stated xpost can do
now); it instead allows use of markup to manually set kerning.

The PLRM description of the show command is quite explicit in its
description of how the current point is adjusted. It is purely
dependent on the glyph width.

Thats fine as long as the default is 'false' and it needs to be
explicitly enabled by the PostScript program in order to be active.
