I know very little about postscript but was hoping to learn a little more. Recently I had to reduce the size of a number of .eps files. I found that by converting them from eps to eps level 3 that the files were reduced by sometimes more than 50%! Why is this? Just by reading a little more it seems that level 3 is just the most recent revision of postscript language. Is this just a case that their have been simplifications of how images are described which result in the much smaller files sizes? Or is it something else? If so, what?

There are certainly features in level 3 that can express things like gradients more compactly than in older language levels, but most of the bloat in typical EPS files is the amount of header/prolog stuff that gets inserted into each file. Depending on what you used to do the conversion, you may simply have eliminated a lot of that extra baggage. -pd
