In 2015 I published 'The Solar System, to scale, for a school yard':
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/schools/solar_system_to_scale.html
which contains two PDFs
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/schools/solar_system_to_scale_a4.pdf
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/schools/solar_system_to_scale_usl.pdf
made from a PostScript program
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/schools/solar_system_to_scale.ps

I think that it is quite good.

The HTML says:
> The PDFs are in English. I'm willing to publish translations into any widely-spoken language that is written in the Roman alphabet (including accents). But you must do the translation: please contact me and we'll discuss what to do.

I have now been approached by somebody offering to translate it into Portuguese.

Has anybody experience of embedding strings in multiple languages into PostScript? I'm considering the following, but would welcome being told of better.

* Where there is currently a string that is replaced with a dictionary:
<<
/EN (String or compound string in English) % EN the default
/PT [(Corda ou composto corda em Portugu) /ecircumflex (s)]
>>

* Language specified with the likes of '/Language /EN def'

* 'dup type /dicttype eq {Language 2 copy known not {pop /EN} if get} if'

Why not consolidate these two documents into a single one? Width: 8.5
inches (US Letter), height: 210 millimeters (ISO A4). That seems to be a
rather common size for international publications.

You mean height = 11" = 792pt; width = 210mm ≈ 595.276pt.

I could. But some printers might try to mis-scale it, and in something in which scale is important, why risk it?

You are correct with respect to "11 inches" (sorry, my mistake) -- but
most of the pages of your document are in landscape mode.

To the best of my knowledge the most important options for "Adobe
Reader" (I can't comment on other PDF readers) are "don't scale" and
"automatically center"; I'm aware that quite a lot of users don't care
at all.

That's sensible, but it isn't wrong to make separate A4 and USL pages.

Meanwhile, to the original question: are there established conventions for storing multiple languages in one .ps file? Is my dictionary proposal obviously improvable?
