#2296 — Q.: Windows -- converting a tabloid file to PostScript

Fromtlvp <mPiOsUcB.EtLlLvEp@att.net>

SubjectQ.: Windows -- converting a tabloid file to PostScript
Message-ID<10r71wjq9p81w$.ai9vifvcrqdx.dlg@40tude.net>
For eventual distillation to PDF, I seek to produce PostScript files,
capturing the content of tabloid size color documents, by "printing" them,
in MS Windows, to a tabloid-capable PostScript printer on port FILE: .

My quandary: use the printer driver for an HP Color LaserJet 8500-PS
(that's what I had been doing on pre-Win8.1 machines)? or for a similar
(but newer) 9500-PS (what I seem to have to do instead on Win8.1)? or are
there other PostScript printer drivers around producing better (and how so?
less obfuscated? more portable? smaller filesize?) PostScript output files?

I may note that GhostView always burps once when fed one of my 8500-PS
files, complaining about the header lines; but it carries on gamely anyway.
And they distill just fine. 9500-PS-generated files, no such burps (yet).

Thanks. Cheers, -- tlvp

I'm not sure I understand your question/quandary, but when I had
what I think is a similar problem, somebody suggested
  http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Poster
which perfectly solved my problem.

John, thanks, but I don't need to split tabloid (or larger) ps or pdf files
into letter-size "bite-sized" chunks -- I just need to generate full-scale
ps files, so that I may distlll them to full-scale PDFs to transmit to a
commercial PoD service for printing full-size.

Your offer is interesting, tho', for other reasons. Thanks. Cheers. -- tlvp

Maybe psresize from the psutils package,
   http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/psutils.htm
(note that poster can also just resize).
Or maybe one of the other psutils? -- still not precisely
sure what you want.

Resizing is not my focus. In psutil terms, I'm after a *-to-ps service,
where * might be .doc or .rtf or .jpg or .png or .pdd or .html or ... ,
and size is to be carefully preserved (not increased or reduced).

And I've pretty much found one in Windows PRINT API, if I print "to FILE:"
using a suitable PostScript printer.

What's "suitable" mean? In my case, capable of dealing with sheets of size
up to 17" x 11" (landscape tabloid, aka ledger, size).

My environment: Windows currently (not Mac, nor OS/2, nor Linux).

My question: is it immaterial which tabloid PS printer driver I use? Are
the drivers for HP CLJ 8500, for HP CLJ 9500, as good as any other? Or is
there a driver for some fancy Agfatronic, or Apple, or Fiery, or IBM color
laser printer that's far better (and, if so, in what way)?

Thanks for the opportunity to clarify my requirement. Cheers, -- tlvp

Sorry for my misunderstanding -- I totally didn't get what you were
after, but now I get it (I think I get it:) after your clarification.
And I have zero explicit knowledge, but sounds to me like that printer
driver can't be doing much more than putting a postscript wrapper
around more-or-less binary/raster/whatever-formatted content. If you
can google the general postscript code for that, you can probably
control the wrapper parameters more directly, and get output exactly
to your liking.

I'm glad I could finally fomulate the problem intelligibly.

Very possibly. For now, though, I think I'll just live with the two
convenient printer drivers I've found (HP CLJ 8500-PS for pre-8.* Windows
devices, and 9500-PS for Win8.1 devices, and let it go at that, without any
idea how they differ, which is better, or what might be better yet.

Thanks for offering your help; and cheers, -- tlvp

Sorry, I have never compared the output
from different PostScript printer drivers.
To see if one driver produces smaller
PostScript files, create them both and
compare the sizes. PostScript is designed
to be portable, so the files shouldn't
differ in this aspect.

The burp is probably because there are
instructions before the actual PostScript
to switch the printer into PostScript mode.
If so, these can be removed using a text
editor; the PostScript will begin with "%!",
so remove any text before that.

Question actually arose only because in Win8.1 I couldn't find any HP 8500
or 8550 PostScript printer driver mention -- only 9500. Made me wonder
whether one would be preferable over the other, or whether "sum'p'n else"
might be better still. For now I'm content with the choices I have :-) .

I was too lazy to find, install, and test candidates, hence my question.

Well ... except that Microsoft, in other PS printer drivers, includes a
dialogue asking whether one prefers to generate a PS file optimized for
speed or for portability. Here "optimized for portability" seems to mean,
"with all fonts involved in the print job embedded in the PS file," while
"for speed" means, "in full 8-bit PS, no font available locally embedded."
Alas, neither the 8500 nor the 9500 HP drivers ask that.

Thanks, in all events, for your ideas. Cheers, -- tlvp

The MS Windows PostScript driver consists of one or two dlls and some
helper files which !are provided by Windows! and a printer specific ppd
file which is plain text (ascii) and as such can be modified by the
user.

I have a "generic" ppd file which allows all DIN formats up to A0, as
well as XL and user defined paper size, which works for a variety of
printers because it is restricted to a widely common subset of printer
properties (apart from the paper sizes which of course are not supported
by each printer).
As you are familiar with PostScript, you will find it easy to modify the
ppd file to meet your requirements.

If you tell me which windows version you need it for, I can send you
this thing along with an .inf file which allows easy installation.

In the former British colony I inhabit, also non-DIN formats like Letter,
Legal, Tabloid, and Ledger could come in handy. Those translate into
215.9mm x 279.4mm, 215.9mm x 355.6mm, 279.4mm x 431.8mm, and its landscape
counterpart 431.8mm x 279.4mm.

But A4 is a close approximation to Letter, and the others can all be
"cropped" from A3.

Thank you for your opimism, and your offer: I could use such PS printer
drivers in all semi-current versions of Windows, in a variety of bitnesses:
32-bit XP, Vista, and Win8.1Update; and 64-bit Windows 7.

My sender address, after you have all the Kehrricht that beschmutzes it
sorgfaeltig weggeschmissen, should gladly accept attachments.

Thank you! Cheers, -- tlvp

And in quite a number of cases paper sized 210 mm wide and 11 inches
high is used; i.e., "ISO A4" width and "US Letter" height. (It will fit
into envelopes in Europe and the USA as well.)

And in another scenario of mixed standards, domestic USA "letter-size
manila file folders" are virtually of "ISO A4" *length*, and width more
than adequate even for 9" wide cut paper. :-) . Cheers, -- tlvp

No problem to extend the driver to non-DIN formats.
I just added the definition for Letter size, you can easily add more of
your choice.
It's all mostly human readable plain text and mostly self-explaining.
If anyone needs more details, one can download Adobe's ppd specification
from
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/ps/index_specs.html

I send the package by personal mail in a few minutes.

Sorry, it's not as easy as I thought.
My changes are not reflected in the UI.
I have to experiment a little bit more.
I'll be back tomorrow.

Never mind, I can always use a larger DIN format, and then change by hand
the specification for the bounding box (in the PS headers) to the
dimensions I need.

Thanks. Cheers, -- tlvp

Hi!
The original question made me try the generic driver installed on my pc
which however did no longer work as required.
We have a printing center equipped with an A0 poster printer, and the IT
department supplied a PostScript driver for Windows supporting the large
formats.
For a reason unknown to me, now under Windows 7 the formats A2, A1 and
A0 can not be chosen for this printer, although the ppd contains them.
Astonishing, the even larger format XL can still be chosen.
I did not want to dig deeper into this mystery.

Instead, I started the standard windows 7 install of a new printer and
as source chose Window Update. This offers a "Generic Color PS Printer
for Commercial Printing" driver, which also supports tabloid, but the
largest supported format in this driver is A3.
So I manually inserted the A2, A1, A0 and XL format into the ppd,
renamed it and installed it. It works, however I only have a 32bit
Windows 7 and I don't know whether this would also work on 64bit.

Thanks, Wilfried; I now have this response both here, and -- with ZIP
attachment of ppd and inf files -- elsewhere. Cheers, -- tlvp

Whenever it's convenient for you. As some correspondents have reported
their mail service thinks my mail service's server is to be RBL'ed, I'd
grown worried that my response from there had failed to reach you.

I've responded from my email now, beginning "Hallo! Danke! Gut getroffen!"

If the domain I mailed from is blacklisted by your service provider, let me
know here so other means may be found. Thanks. -- tlvp
