#1734 — resourceforall fails

I want to create an array with a list of available fonts. So, some simplified code:

%!

(product = ) = product =
(+ FontNames) ==
/FontNames [
	(*) {dup length string copy} 65535 string /Font resourceforall
] def
(- FontNames) ==
(+pstack) = pstack (-pstack) =

This produces a log file (from which a block of font names have bee deleted.

product =
Acrobat Distiller 11.0

(+ FontNames)
%%[ Error: undefinedresource; OffendingCommand: findresource; ErrorInfo: CharOffsets @ eB,ˇˇˇˇt*√Resource/CIDFont/NanumGothicExtraBold ]%%

Stack:
/CIDFont
/NanumGothicExtraBold
/CIDFont
/NanumGothicExtraBold
false
-dict-
(%hostfont%Resource/CIDFont/)
/cid_CIDFONT_INFO
(ZyphyteOffset)
(ZyphyteOffsetOblique)
••• Many font names deleted •••
(Roadgeek2005Series1B)
(Roadgeek2005Mittelschrift)
(Roadgeek2005Engschrift)
(Roadgeek2000SeriesF)

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

This is unhelpful. I could wrap the resourceforall in a stopped, but that will stop the loop, rather than causing it to resume at the next resource. So many font names will be missing.

Please, learned folks of this fine forum, what can be done to prevent errors, and not just on my current machine, but on any machine on which the PostScript might be executed?

If it helps, my suspicion is that a font name is being read as if in a different format, so is being read as lots of weird control characters.

This program run from Ghostscript 9.97 prints:

product =
GPL Ghostscript
(+ FontNames)
(- FontNames)
+pstack
-pstack

and the /FontNames array contains a great many of font names.

I'suggest you look after the font NanumExtraBold which seems to throw the
error (or you could mail me the font to do some analysis).

Yes, and no. I’ve already had Font Book do “Validate Fonts”, and remove the red-flagged. But even that was cheating, as:

So I really want to fix the PostScript rather than the fonts, such that when the code is run on any machine, with or without duff fonts, it still works. (Well, of course I want to fix both PostScript and fonts, but only the PostScript is relevant here.)

There appear to be non-ASCII characters in the log output, so I’ve uploaded some files.
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/bugs/20131125_resourceforall.ps
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/bugs/20131125_resourceforall.log
Obviously the first file made the second.

Maybe it is an implementation bug in Acrobat 11. At least it seems uncommen
to me that the resourceforall operator inernally calls findresource (maybe
it is a Windows specific hack to get the names from the fonts folder?).

And, CID fonts are a separate resosurce category (at least a of PLRM 3rd
ed), so why is a CID font treated when listing "ordinary" fonts?

Mac, not Windows. But you have made me check the version number: though it fails in XI, it works in Distiller 8. Sigh. It must be an Adobe bug.

But is there anything I can do to trap or prevent the problem?

(Also, uploaded file slightly updated.)

Done. Thank you for the suggestion.

So it should work, but doesn’t. Is there a way to achieve much the same (array holding names of available fonts) that doesn’t have this problem?
