Hello, I would like to model the T in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/) logo using CAD software. I am thinking of using Postscript to generate the letter in 2D, and then extrude it. Any suggestions as to how I could model the T's curly horizontal bar in Postscript, as accurately as possible? Many thanks. rp

Hi, I have made a vector description of an object in a bitmap using a paint program, GSview, Ghostscript, an an editor. I crop the bitmap to only the desired object and export it as an EPS or PS bitmap. As PostScript is text, I can edit the EPS to display in GSview as a medium gray object at a convenient position and size. Then I use translate and scale to create a coordinate system for the object. Sometimes the center of the object is used. At other times a corner is used for the zero, zero X, Y position. You can use lines in a grid to debug or visualize the coordinate system. I change the color and place small circles, dots, or crosses at noticable points on the object. In the text file, this is folloing the bitmap so it is not overwritten. These will be your starting control points. Change the color and use moveto, lineto, curveto, and stroke to create lines or curves between the control points. View in GSview and tweak to the accuracy you need. You will add control points as needed. When a line is nice enough I change the color back to that of the control points and start the next segment in the second color. When a curve enclosing part of the object is complete, use closepath to finish it and start on the next piece. Comment out the control point indicators and use fill to finish the vector representation of the object. Comment out the bitmap and you have a finished PostScript program to draw your object. Starting is a bit tedious, but work goes fairly well once you get things properly scaled and marked out. The logo indicated is rather low resolution. So you may want to find a larger one or scan a hardcopy. Regards, Steve N.

That T is in the file http://i1.nyt.com/images/misc/nytlogo379x64.gif -- which is at barely 1/16th the height you'd really need for accurate work. So: good luck :-) . Cheers, -- tlvp -- Avant de repondre, jeter la poubelle, SVP.
