Might we adopt a policy of benign neglect towards richard, i.e:
rot reply to any of his posts?

This is getting tiring.

And/or, can anyone tell me how to blackhole any thread richard
posts? (Thunderbird 24.5.0)

To ignore any given person, and replies to their message, just define a
filter (Tools / Message Filters) and set the condition to detect their
posts by detecting their "From" line (the fact richard uses a "invalid"
address give this a chance at detecting someone else using that same
address), and set the operation to ignore subthread.

At least not until he apologizes, in the newsgroup, to everyone he has insulted and abused.

I detect a slight flaw in this plan.

richard's posts may then be answered by people whose knowledge and
competence is as lacking as his, and other newbies reading the group
might take those posts as being good answers to problems similar to the
ones richard posts.

If and when that happens, then those of us who know better can post corrections in reply to
*them*. But not to richard. His requests for aid should be ignored.

Regardless of how we accomplish it, though, I think it's high time we all agree that richard
gets no more assistance until he has a major change of attitude. He seems to believe that
this newsgroup exists for the purpose of fixing the problems he creates, that he is somehow
entitled to our assistance that we are somehow obligated to provide.

It's time to burst his bubble. Unless and until RtS apologizes for his behavior, all of his posts
along the lines of "why isn't this working?" should be answered with nothing beyond
"because you screwed up again."

The greater danger, IMHO, is not that richard's questions will be answered by newbies as
clueless as he [assuming they exist], but rather that newbies' questions will be answered by
richard. In that case, his posts should not be ignored: misinformation demands correction.

Trolls feed off attention- good or bad.
The best way to starve a troll is to give NO reply at all.

Richard the Stupid isn't really a troll, though. He's just a dope. A self-entitled dope who thinks
that this newsgroup exists solely to write and debug code for him, for free.

I don't think so.

None one would spend as long as he has achieving nothing at all without
giving up.

How do you suppose he got the nickname Richard the Stupid?

Oh yes, he's a troll. He's intentionally posted things along the lines
of say on November 15th mentioning how this is a historical day from
1963, Texas, blah blah... and when people told his dumb ass it was
November 22nd, he replied with "Troll bait, you all fell for it."

I don't consider that evidence that he's a troll, I consider it evidence that his appendage "the
Stupid" is well-deserved.

That cannot be prevented anyway, as you are demonstrating repeatedly. Logic
dictates that there will always be more people who are not knowledgable and
competent than people who are. However, not feeding the troll – *any*
troll – and ignoring lusers will keep the noise down. Correcting wrong
answers to their postings, and pointing out that some approaches are unwise,
is still possible. One must keep in mind that one does not need to save the
world alone.
