Xnews does not support many character set encodings does it? Still I suppose it
is a wee bit better then an ms alternative.

No need to blame more advanced readers for Xnews lack of features.

Look into mime-proxy

  ¦ Mime-proxy is a program to convert character sets in news articles. It
  ¦ adds support for character sets to newsreaders (such as Xnews or Gravity)
  ¦ that don't manage them.

Tried that and other things, but no go.  Went with, :-),
      case 23:

(quotes worked for me)
