In my opinion google groups are very good. What makes you think their not good enough ?

For one thing, you don't seem to be able to cross post (post to more 
than one user group at the same time).

You can't use a dedicated news reader like Mozilla Thunderbird which is
*way* more efficient and *much* faster to use than this cumersome web
interface of Google.

Google did not invent newsgroups - they just took Deja News, added their
own groups to it and created their own interface for it. But the origin
is "Usenet" which already existed long before the web was invented:
