Hello.
I'm looking for relational database, that doesn't need extension to be enabled in php.ini and saves data to directory and is programmed in PHP.

Examples, that aren't what I need: "sqlite" - needs extension to be enabled.
"microdb" (https://morris.github.io/microdb/) - isn't relational.

So if somebody knows something, then let me know.

With the best wishes,
Kristjan Robam

I doubt you'll find anything, but if you did PHP would be way too slow
to do much of anything. There's a reason why relational databases are
written in a compiled language. A lot of code needs to be executed even
for the simplest of queries.

Yes, but I have my own reasons for that. When my webpage goes offline, I have to fast move the webpage to another place. This kind of thing would be good for browser internet games, that don't take so much space.
I am pretty sure there is one already made, so that I don't have to start programming it myself.

With the best wishes,
Kristjan Robam

There are better ways to keep websites up and running (but that's off
topic in a PHP newsgroup). A relational database is NOT a simple
project. There's a reason why even a very basic relational database
runs a couple of megabytes of compiled code.

I have never seen anyone try to code an RDB in MySQL (or any other
scripting language for that matter).

Okey, I think also that it is not a simple project. But to write a simple one may not be very hard. Like this "microdb" ( simple php based database system). Maybe I should ask the guy who wrote this, that maybe he would consider making it be relational. There would be only some modifications for it to go relational.

A relational database system is much more complicated than the simple
one your talking about. Many, many things to consider. Sqlite is about
the simplest one around - and you can see how much code that takes.

Yes. But what I mean in simple functions on relational database is just joining tables and getting the data collected of these kind of queries. That would be not hard to program.

Which is what I meant, also. It rapidly becomes VERY complicated.
That's why SQLite's source code is so big. It implements all of the
basic functions of SQL, but is missing many of the more advanced
functions. Even so, the source code is several megabytes in size.

Actually this problem sounds simple. I think, for a advanced programmer, it would not be so difficult to program and would take only some lines or pages. Personally I think, if you have programming experience at least 15 years and you are a real programming fan, then you know how to make even very difficult problems very simple. Like Albert Einstein said: " Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
Basically I think that genius can make difficult problems maybe about 1000 times simpler.

I'm glad YOU think it's simple.

For the record - I've been programming for over 50 years, including 8 at
IBM and 29 as an independent consultant, mainly for Fortune 500
companies. I've been using RDB's for well over 30 years.

There's only so far you can simplify something. It would be nice if you
could create a car without an engine, drive train, steering and brakes.
That would make it a lot simpler!

Joining tables is *not* "simple".

If you need a database, use a database. Trying to build your own
database in PHP to avoid using an extension like SQLite makes no sense,
really.

I see. Ok, I think it's time to end this discussion. Everybody got their thoughts expressed and I think you made the point, that it's meaningless.

The solution is to use plain text files in that case, they work ok as
long as you are working with a relatively small quantity of data.

The source code for sqlite is around 11M and it's dynamically linked, so
you rewrite it in PHP you would need a larger code as sqlite is
dynamically linked to other libraries which you would also need to write
in PHP. Your relation database written in PHP would be slower than
sqlite and would affect your site performance too.

As far as I know, all webhotels who provide PHP do also provide sqlite
support as it by default enabled in php.ini.

The problem, why I made this topic is mainly because I don't want again to set up the database, when my webpage goes down. I am willing to find a new(free) place for it, but I don't want to start looking out the mysql database address and user name and password and so on. I want everything to be automatic.

With best wishes,
Kristjan Robam

Then use sqlite, here it's just a question about the location of the
database file, which in your case would be the same documentroot
directory as where you have the php pages at.

$db = new SQLite3("mydatabasefile.db");

No passwords to be remembered, if you want you can encrypt the database,
then you need to encryption key. I do recommend that you use .htaccess
file to deny access to the database file (of course that works only on
apache web servers that allows user defined configurations).

He's not going to learn until he wastes a lot of time. He has
absolutely no idea how complicated even a simple RDBMS is.

I am asking anyway.
Is somebody found this kind of database from web?

I would really appreciate it.
I am gonna search it myself too now...
But the faster I get the answer, the better it is...

With best regards,
