After reading all the anti-spam replies, I took a quick look at your web 
page.

The example you give compresses the sample PHP code from 76905 bytes to 
35036 bytes.  That's about 45% of the original.

I've built something that I call phpLibMgr.  The most readily available 
example of packed/unpacked that I have takes a cli application from 
886,997 bytes to 166,102 bytes, which is 18% of the original.  Running 
the packed application with an "unpack" argument restores the original 
source code to its readable form so one can maintain it.  Every required 
user-written routine is included in the packed form, and no uncalled 
routines are present.

The packed application (once unpacked) can be re-imported into the 
library that is created by packing it, changes are flagged/versioned, 
and so forth.  And as a bonus one can make queries about functions to 
determine where they are called, which is most heavily used, which are 
recursive-via-call, what the call-paths between the mainline and any 
given function are, and so forth.

Apparently, since the "spam!" outcries are so loud, you must be trying 
to sell your thinger.  Once mine is complete (presuming that it ever is 
"complete") it will become freely available in source form.

One of the main reasons that I wrote phpLibMgr is that I write cli 
applications in PHP.  Some of them (like "partitionBackup", or 
"bootSetup") are fairly crucial to my workflow.  And there is *nothing* 
more infuriating than trying to use a trusted application while you are 
modifying one of the library routines it uses, and finding that your 
in-progress modifications are not working and neither is your crucial 
application because the included library function is broken.

Basically phpLibMgr acts like a static link operation, all the necessary 
routines are included in the output module.  I'd like to include a copy 
of PHP in the packed result but the terms of its GNU licensing agreement 
appear to prohibit such a thing, so packed applications only run on 
systems already having PHP installed.

It's an interim measure, one of those tools built in order to build the 
tools necessary for something further.  Frankly much of it is "crap code".

While I understand the financial pressures unavoidable within modern 
society, I find the blatant commercialism present throughout the 
software industry to be grossly offensive.  One example is the google 
play store and its demoware and crippleware and payware.  Your post 
seems to be another example.

although you are right, by virtue of including the word 'php' in your
project name, you are ineligible to include any of the PHP source code
without breaking the license.

I have no interest in including the PHP source code.  What I had in mind 
was a modified PHP interpreter that pulled its source from the tail-end 
of the executable.  That would entail distributing PHP in binary form. 
The requirements of the GPL seem to be prohibitive.  Screw 'em, nobody 
is using this thing but me, and I have PHP installed.

Unless you're using PHP 3 or less, GPL has nothing to do with the PHP
license (or PHP) in anyway.

You're confusing the PHP source code with PHP scripts.

You cannot distribute the code for the interpreter (or anything else
provided by Zend) and call it PHP.

This is different from scripts or other code you write which operates
completely independent of the Zend code, which Zend cannot control since
they don't own it in the first place.

I do see from looking at the current redistribution terms that they are 
quite fond of the name "PHP", which does not pose a problem imo.

That's exactly what I was talking about.  Currently an application that 
has been "statically linked" (so to speak) into a single compressed file 
will uncompress itself and run on any linux system that has PHP 
installed, but with a slightly modified copy of the interpreter 
"prepended" to the compressed script such an application could run on 
systems that don't have PHP installed.  For some of the things I'm 
interested in (system install, system backup, boot setup) that could be 
beneficial.

My mistake.  I didn't understand you were including a modified copy of
the interpreter.  IN that case I agree with Matthew.
