You can. Try:
echo 'we have a match - key: ',$file2cols[SS2KEY],"\n";
or
echo "we have a match - key: {$file2cols[SS2KEY]}\n";
You must use curly braces around (multi-dimensional) array variables
and constant keys in strings.
