A wild guess, as the original code is syntactically correct, assuming it is 
followed by “;” (after optional whitespace).  It is then parsed as follows:

  array   ( "this (are) only a test"   ) ;
  T_ARRAY ( T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING ) ;
