I had no idea! Never having used it, I had always assumed that MACLISP
shared the behavior of things like SBCL, Smalltalk, and recent versions
of Python — transparently overflowing from fixnums to bignums.

One advantage of the transparent-overflow approach is that most of the
time users don’t care what the actual fixnum limit is — it’s “just” a
performance optimization, in that your arithmetic starts consing when
you exceed the limit.

This does mean, however, that by default, for example on SBCL, all of
your arithmetic is stuffed full of overflow checks, which has
performance costs of its own.

This is an interesting idea; I imagine it’s a pretty big performance
win, particularly since MACLISP predates generational garbage collection
(and, I imagine, never had it bolted on). Consing *per se* is pretty
fast in a pointer-bumping allocator; what used to kill you was the GC,
and generational GC largely solved that problem. Still, I'm pretty sure
that Java, LuaJIT, Chez Scheme, V8, and SpiderMonkey don’t box their
fixnums.

Note that MacLisp _does_ have "transparent-overflow" arithmetic, you
just have to use `PLUS`, `TIMES` and `DIFFERENCE` instead of `+`, `*`
and `-`. The `+` family is fixnum-only, but the `PLUS` family handles
all types of numbers.

There is also a flonum-only family: `+$`, `*$`, `-$`, etc.

The names `PLUS`, `TIMES`, `DIFFERENCE`, etc. are taken from LISP 1.5,
so you can think of them as the "true" Lisp arithmetic functions. `+`,
`+$` and friends are just MacLisp extensions for efficient machine
arithmetic.

I would say that claim is long obsolete. As evidence, look at what the

[ For the Nth time: I'm not talking about memory size, only about
speed. And not specifically for "heap intensive" operations, but for
just normal execution of "typical" programs. ]

I don't have a reference, no. But I'm pretty sure there are plenty.

I guess the most obvious argument is just the very small number of
language implementations that use reference counting and are "high
performance" (which presumably implies that the implementors have spent
some effort to try and use an efficient memory management technique).

I know there exists a GC for the JVM that uses reference counting, but
it's only one out of many others. It is competitive speed-wise, but it
took a lot of effort to get there (it's very far from a simple reference
counting system like CPython's).

There's also Lean which uses reference counting, but I haven't seen any
indication that it's particularly fast. AFAIK, the main purpose is to
allow "functional in place update" (by checking if the refcount is equal
to 1), IOW circumvent the language constraint on everything being
immutable yet without resorting to monads.

Given the amount of effort poured into the GC of many language
implementations, if reference counting was competitive speed-wise, it'd
be used a lot more, since it's a lot easier to implement (and debug).

Perl was probably the pioneer here. Implementations use garbage
collection simply because it’s so much easier to do, nothing more.

As I mentioned elsewhere Java gets “high performance” by minimizing
heap allocation, at the cost of writing more circumlocutory code.

Lisp would be the same. What’s his name, Lisp guru Paul Graham, has a
blog online where he talks about working on an early dotcom startup
where the development language was Lisp. That gave them a lot of
productivity boosts. But the core part of the in-memory database was
implemented in C++, precisely where the garbage collector could not
get its sticky fingers on it.

Do you mean https://www.paulgraham.com/avg.html ?

The mention of C++ was after he sold the company to Yahoo:

In January 2003, Yahoo released a new version of the editor written
in C++ and Perl. It's hard to say whether the program is no longer
written in Lisp, though, because to translate this program into C++
they literally had to write a Lisp interpreter: the source files of
all the page-generating templates are still, as far as I know, Lisp
   code. (See Greenspun's Tenth Rule.)

He mentions that the ordering system of his site was written in C but
doesn't say why.

It's not that great an essay imho. And the stuff he says about Python
now seems quaint.

No, this one <https://paulgraham.com/carl.html>:

    4. Because we have about 2 gigs of static data we need rapid
access to, we use C++ code to memory-map huge files containing
pointerless C structs (of flights, fares, etc), and then access
these from Common Lisp using foreign data accesses. A struct field
access compiles into two or three instructions, so there's not
really any performance. penalty for accessing C rather than Lisp
objects. By doing this, we keep the Lisp garbage collector from
seeing the data (to Lisp, each pointer to a C object is just a
fixnum, though we do often temporarily wrap these pointers in Lisp
objects to improve debuggability). Our Lisp images are therefore
only about 250 megs of "working" data structures and code.

A lot of the stuff people are *still* saying about Python seems quaint
;).

This sounds like there was no substantial C++ code other than an mmap
call. As it was a chunk of static pointer-free data being mapped, there
wasn't any allocation going on. It sounds to me like the CL
implementation was missing mmap, so they used an FFI instead. Anyway
it's perfectly normal to do stuff like that. It's consistent with what
I've said earlier, about most stuff in the computer's memory not being
under GC. Are you seriously saying reference counting could have
somehow appeared instead?

Fwiw I haven't used CL in a while, but GHC has several mmap modules, so
the above approach wouldn't have needed C++ code. E.g.:

That was the point: to keep a large amount of data out of the hands of
the Lisp garbage collector.

Admit that the Lisp garbage collector cannot scale to dealing with
large amounts of data?

You say that facetiously, but that is in fact what people are doing
nowadays, when they load huge amounts of data with NumPy, Pandas etc
for analysis with Python code.

It's not a scaling issue in the slightest.

NumPy and friends keep their data away from the CPython reference
counting system the same way mmap keeps the mapped data away from a Lisp
GC.

Large amounts of data => can’t cope.

What would you call it, then?

They don’t, you know. Think of NumPy returning an array of floats:
each float has to be allocated as a Python object. According to you
(and others), that should be pretty much fatal to performance.

Numpy float arrays don't work like that at all. They're more like in
Python's array module, a bunch of packed floats in a C-like array in
memory, though they can be non-contiguous. That's why types like
np.int8 exist too.

Of course numpy arrays can be converted to and from Python lists, but
then the usual costs are incurred. The NP array is refcounted as a
single object, as one would expect.

See: https://numpy.org/doc/1.22/user/c-info.how-to-extend.html#getting-at-ndarray-memory-and-accessing-elements-of-the-ndarray

NumPy can do what it likes internally. That’s why I said “returning”:
the result must still be Python-compatible.

"Ambiguity" for "plausible deniability", apparently, because what you
just wrote doesn't really have enough detail to configure a problem at
all, it can just describe issues with implementation of computer
programs in real-life computer and computing machinery - the difference
between "infinite tape" and a human computer's desk, paper and
pens/pencils, or between "infinite tape" and a computer's resources.

If you are going to be pointing fingers at others for "ambiguity" of
this sort, it'd perhaps be at least considerate that you didn't do the
same thing in your own posts in the same 24 hour period...

(What is "*the* Lisp garbage collector"? Is that actually defined for
all lisps? Encompassing Emacs Lisp and RnRS too?)

Have you actually implemented both? I feel like a bunch of stuff you're
saying come from inexperience.

In my case I've implemented an Awk with reference counting and later a
Lisp with GC. I used RC in the Awk because at that time, I didn't know
how to write a GC. The GC in the Lisp that I wrote was quite simple but
I still wouldn't say that it was easier than RC. Of course "serious"
GC's are very intricate and not remotely comparable to the naive
reference counting in something like Python. It's ridiculous to say
it's easier.

Here's Simon Marlow et al's 2008 paper on the GHC garbage collector:

https://simonmar.github.io/bib/papers/parallel-gc.pdf

I have a vague recollection that the GHC GC was later redone to be even
more sophisticated. And it's nowhere near as fancy as the GC's used in
Java which have gotten a lot more development energy.

If of any interest, the current "big" Python implementation is CPython
and it uses reference counting. MicroPython, a smaller Python version
for microcontrollers, uses GC. Lua, considered a smaller-footprint and
more embeddable language than Python, also uses GC. MicroPython ran on
MCU's with as little as 16KB of ram (BBC Micro:bit v1) though that was
very cramped. It's reasonably usable with 32KB. I don't think CPython
could run at all on those machines.

I'd be interested to know why CPython uses RC. If I ever meet Guido
I'll try to remember to ask him. I do have the impression that
immediate reclamation for stuff like file descriptors was claimed as a
big advantage, before Python itself got RAII in the "with" statement.

Slightly related, do you even use Lisp? I think your picture of how
Lisp programs use memory is also unrealistic.

I don’t claim to be smart enough to implement such things. My
experience comes from using implementations created by people much
smarter than I am.

Reference counting + GC.

Lua was designed specifically for embedding into other apps. Python
(specifically CPython) was considered less suitable because it was a
larger and more complex language.

But guess what: I think Python has become more popular for embedded
use than Lua.

That may be true, but I doubt it has much to do with memory management.

Out of curiosity, I looked it up
<https://docs.micropython.org/en/latest/develop/memorymgt.html>. Note
how they need to offer a separate “tracked allocation” API for use
from C code? Somehow their “garbage collection” scheme seems to have
some interesting limitations, no doubt for speed and efficiency.

By contrast CPython simply exposes the regular object-management API
for use by extension modules. Or the external code can use regular
malloc(3)/free(3) for its own purposes (separate from interfacing with
Python), and that will work, too.

> I'd be interested to know why CPython uses RC.

Because of the reasons we’ve been discussing. You still refuse to
accept that there might be a point to that?

> Slightly related, do you even use Lisp?

Mainly for customizing Emacs.

Let’s just say, “Lisp” and “high performance” were never terms that
commonly went together. Whereas nowadays “Python” and “high
performance” are indeed commonly uttered in the same sentence ...
