Those of us who had to write code to laboriously decircularize
about-to-be-dead structures on d machines definitely did!

But your point is right: these are implementation, not language, questions.

(I also hate the stupid 'reference counting is better' thing. It is 2000
already, machines live or die on their caches. I drop a large structure on
the floor. A reference-counted implementation now dutifully walks over
the entire structure reducing all the counts to zero *and ensuring the
machine's caches are full of data that will never be used again*. An
implementation with a copying GC ... never touches that memory again. One
of these approaches is a lot less hostile to caches than the other.)

It does have some subtle, but far-reaching, implications for language
usage, though.

For example, pure GC makes it easy to support multithreading. But the
downside is that it is easy for a single long-running program to
consume all available memory, even if its memory needs at any
particular moment are not that great. So you need to put arbitrary
constraints on its heap size. And if turns it that wasn’t enough for a
particular run, then you need to stop and re-run with a larger heap
allocation. Which defeats some of the point of dynamic memory
allocation when you have to micromanage such things, doesn’t it?

This is why both Perl and Python stuck with the hybrid approach. In
Perl’s case, they kind of fudged their approach to multithreading as a
consequence, with implications for sharing objects across threads.
While the Python folks have put a lot of effort into coming up with a
more comprehensive solution, making reference counts just a little bit
nondeterministic in return for greater performance while still
allowing object sharing to work the way you would expect.

with all due respect, garbage collection is very difficult. Most
programmers will use the best algorithm available; like guile does. PERL
is the fastest interpreter I have ever used, compiling the code to C
results in slower running speed. There is an issue with heap...

there is no perfect solution; python can be compiled with LTO, I don't
have the numbers on me...

from what I understand this is a new method.

Why are there so many languages using it, then?

It’s difficult to implement efficiently -- that I would agree with.
Because that’s my point.

If there was a “best algorithm available”, then why would there need
to be a diversity of implementations?

And Perl is precisely one of the examples I mentioned, is it not, that
tries to keep reference-counting as a first resort before falling back
to garbage collection?

Wasn’t there a claim made by somebody in another posting that
reference-counting adds performance-sapping overhead compared to a
pure garbage collection approach? Yet here you are unwittingly
disproving that.

How many programming languages do you know? If they all do the same

Does Perl really have a garbage collector besides reference counting?
As far as I know you have to use the weaken() function when dealing with
cyclic references.

No, it is a form of *memory allocation management*.

“Garbage” is the term for “memory that is unreachable, but still
unavailable for reallocation”.

automatic garbage collector. Communications of the ACM, 19(9), 522–526.
https://doi.org/10.1145/360336.360345

Abstract
This paper describes a new way of solving the storage reclamation problem
for a system such as Lisp that allocates storage automatically from a heap,
and does not require the programmer to give any indication that particular
items are no longer useful or accessible. A reference count scheme for
reclaiming non-self-referential structures, and a linearizing, compacting,
copying scheme to reorganize all storage at the users discretion are
proposed. The algorithms are designed to work well in systems which use
multiple levels of storage, and large virtual address space. They depend on
the fact that most cells are referenced exactly once, and that reference
counts need only be accurate when storage is about to be reclaimed. A
transaction file stores changes to reference counts, and a multiple
reference table stores the count for items which are referenced more than
once.

algorithm for cyclical functional programming. Proceedings of the 7th
International Symposium on Memory Management, ISMM ’08, 71–80.
https://doi.org/10.1145/1375634.1375645

Abstract
Reference-counting garbage collection is known to have problems with the
collection of cyclically connected data. There are two historically
significant styles of cycle-aware algorithms: The style of Brownbridge that
maintains a subset of marked edges and the invariant that every cycle
contains at least one marked edge, and the style of
Martinez-Lins-Wachenchauzer (MLW) that involves local mark-and-scan
procedures to detect cycles. The former is known to be difficult to design
and implement correctly, and the latter to have pathological efficiency for
a number of very typical situations. We present a novel algorithm that
combines both approaches to obtain reasonably efficient local mark-and-scan
phases with a marking invariant that is rather cheap to maintain. We
demonstrate that the assumptions of this algorithm about mutator activity
patterns make it well-suited, but not limited, to a functional programming
technique for cyclic data. We evaluate the approach in comparison with
simple and more sophisticated MLW algorithms using a simple benchmark based
on that functional paradigm.

Both references that you gave show that reference counting does not
solve full problem. So it is resonable to say that garbage collector
uses reference counting as one of its methods, but not that
unqualified "reference counting is a form of garbage collection".
Reference counting may be part of solution, but without disclaimer
phrase as about would mean that it is full solution.

Natural language is imprecise it's a question of terminology, like
whether 0 is a natural number. The answer is not deterministic ;).
From
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garbage_collection_%28computer_science%29 :

Tracing garbage collection is the most common type of garbage
collection, so much so that "garbage collection" often refers to
tracing garbage collection, rather than other methods such as
   reference counting. ...

Reference counting garbage collection is where each object has a
count of the number of references to it. Garbage is identified by
having a reference count of zero. An object's reference count is
incremented when a reference to it is created and decremented when a
reference is destroyed. When the count reaches zero, the object's
   memory is reclaimed.[15]

> Reference counting may be part of solution, but without disclaimer

We could say: reference counting is a form of GC that works only in some
situations.

Yes, everyone is free to use his own concepts or publish his
own definitions. However, for effective communication, parties
who wish to discuss a topic should agree on common definitions.

I see that indeed some people include reference counting under
"garbage collection" and others do not.

Donald Knuth had a subsection 2.3.5 "Lists and Garbage Collection"
in his 1968 "The Art of Computer Programming" where he mentions
reference counting. So we might think that to him it /is/ a form
of garbage collection as it is mentioned under this heading.
However, he chose a wording that seems to say, to him,
  it is /not/ garbage collection:

|Two principal methods have been suggested for maintaining the
|available space list: the use of /reference counters/, and
|/garbage collection/.

  . Interesting comma there!

A bit more about definitions of concepts:

For negotiations about weapons two parties need to find a
common definition of the concept of a "warhead". More can
be found in "What exactly is a warhead?" by Anna Hadley,
  Sandia Report SAND98-1201, June 1998.

In 1819, a merchant refused to pay a fish product tax on whale
oil because a whale was not a fish. A court finally ruled
that a whale is a fish. Later, a law established that a whale
is not a fish. (According to D. Graham Burnett in "Trying

It is problematic to /live/ trap in many places.

Where I am it is legal to trap - dead or live - on your own property.
But if you live trap you become responsible for the animal's welfare:
you must give medical aid if it is injured, and must arrange to
release it safely [hopefully somewhere it won't find its way back].

Better to dead trap or shoot pests.

He should have used the title “Lists and Memory Allocation
Management”. That would have been much clearer, don’t you think?

Now, you can propose that “garbage collection” is synonymous with
“memory allocation management”. But that seems redundant, to have two
terms for the same thing. Not to mention that it seems to imply, does
it not, that all allocated objects are “garbage”, whereas the actual
code that goes under the name of “garbage collector” only wants to
collect objects that have been allocated, but are no longer used by
the program.

Therefore, it makes sense that the “garbage” part of “garbage
collector” refers specifically to such memory allocations. Such
objects cannot occur with reference counting, in the absence of
reference cycles. Therefore, in such a situation, reference counting
never produces “garbage” that needs “collecting”, which is why it
doesn’t make sense to refer to it as a form of “garbage collection”.

And when you *do* get reference cycles, the reference counter is no
longer capable of coping on its own. So just when you have actual
“garbage” that needs collecting, a piece of code that some still want
to call a “garbage collector” doesn’t actually work.

Which is *another* reason not to refer to reference-counting as a form
of “garbage collection”.

Does that make sense?

AFAIK, there is no agreed upon meaning of "garbage collection" in this
respect: some people take it to include both "tracing GC" and "reference
counting", while others take it to mean only "tracing GC".
Always keep that in mind whenever you read or write "GC".

Here also, there can be minor disagreements over what
"unreachable" means.

I'm pretty sure that 45 years ago we all agreed that "reference
counting" counted as a tool for "garbage collection". But language
changes, so perhaps that's no longer the case today. Seem like a loss
to me. (Similar to the way many people now claim that Lisp no longer
counts as a call-by-value language.)

Really? That would be something I haven't encountered before. Can you
explain how such a disagreement comes about?
