#17308 — Maintainer of the FAQ

SubjectMaintainer of the FAQ

One of the good resources is going to death if nobody maintains it. In
the past we have discussed, but apparently there is not a new
maintainer. The FAQ should start covering ES5 since all major engines
has implemented it.
My personal preferences are for someone who is able to maintaining the
current FAQ and adding new things. Would be great if the new
maintainer writes articles more often. Of course not everyone has much
spare time.
In that thread I think we should decide who will be the new
maintainer, because the FAQ has not touched since 2010.

Scott Sauyet is good choice, he is native English speaker, has
positive attitude and enough technical skills.

Thomas Lahn except his terrible attitude, he could maintain it, but I
am not pretty sure he wants that.

Give proposals for the new maintainer, also wiki pages is good
variant.

That's definitely what our FAQ should be.

Therein lies the rub.

Thank you. I'm honored, but like everyone else, I'm too short of time
to take this on by myself. I would be more than willing to contribute
to a group effort, however.

I really think our best bet would be a wiki, editable by anyone, but
with a smallish group of approvers, and possibly one dictator to make
final decisions if the approvers cannot agree.

> Thomas Lahn except his terrible attitude, he could maintain it, but I

There are many people here who would be great contributors to it,
Thomas most certainly included. Last time around, I nominated Richard
Cornford, Lasse Reichstein Nielsen, Stefan Weiss, RobG, and ... wait
for it ..., Azen Bozhilov. :-) (I guess turn-about is fair play!)
Most of these people declined. I also suggested as members of a group
such as the wiki approvers above, Thomas Lahn, Dmitry Soshnikov, John
Harris, and John Stockton. I would have also included Matt Kruse had
he not already declined.

Does anyone have experience setting up something like MediaWiki?

Maybe we can just try this and see if it's working, keeping it in
parallel for now with the existing FAQ.

I think the traditional FAQ is a dead, an MDN style wiki is a better
idea. Since MDN is already far more extensive than the FAQ will ever
be (though very flawed), it may be better to just spend whatever time
contributors have updating articles there.

First step would be to get the notes moved over, then find a good
place for each of the other articles. The CLJ FAQ, if it should
continue to exist, can then simply reference appropriate parts of MDN.

I do not think the FAQ is dead. It has been suffering an extended period of
time from being partially outdated, partially bad worded; so it needs to be
updated and fixed. One should certainly strive to do that. (Actually,
having seen my name coming up again, I have sent Jim Ley a certain e-mail
yesterday and are awaiting his reply.)

However, AISB (probably), it should not be attempted to make the FAQ into a
documentation. That is not the purpose of a FAQ. If at all possible, it
should give concise, clear answers to *frequently* *asked* *questions*,
particularly to beginners, so that those questions need not be asked (by
them) in the newsgroup, and regulars can deal with more interesting
questions instead.

Insofar I agree that details should be handled by references to external
sources, if they exist and are of sufficient quality. (Actually, checking
the quality of a source for potential reference in the FAQ may improve its
quality as well.)

Care must be taken with linking to wikis, though, for the information there
may change at any time (and given that there are always fewer experts than
intermediates, and fewer intermediates than novices, not necessarily for the
better). Who is going to check for the quality of the referenced articles
regularly? Therefore, given the choice, I would rather link to a good blog
entry than a wiki article. I am thus not convinced that a wiki *instead* of
a FAQ would work out. It might complement the FAQ (and eventually replace
the FAQ Notes), but is it not easier and better for all of us to deep-link
to regular's websites instead?

Usually the quality of the linked resources is regularly handled by
the members of the group. All of the FAQ entries are reposted in
certain period of time. If there is out of date resource or not found,
someone will report it.
Even that it is maintainer job to link and check the quality of the
resources.
If FAQ is moved to wiki pages, should not everyone have editorial
permissions. I am proposing 3 editors of wiki pages or FAQ.
Scott Sauyet, Thomas Lahn and Dr. J. R. Stockton.

Do you agree with these names?

If you spent the time your spend denigrating other people working on the

I somewhat disagree. A newsgroup FAQ ***MUST*** be primarily in the
newsgroup, so that everyone who regularly uses the newsgroup will see it
every time that appears, and if knowledgeable will be encouraged to
think about any desirable changes.

Distribution of the present stale FAQ, and of its daily fragments,
should be terminated, leaving it as a dated, outdated, Web page.

The sections about posting to the newsgroup, Section 1 and a revised
Section 14, can be posted as a meta-FAQ, with a new section leading to
currently-recommended other sources of information, such as the old FAQ,
JSmentors and any Wiki that is set up.

Any Wiki should copy only those parts of the FAQ which are or become of
current *interest*; and should rewritten as needed in the copying. For
example, all links should be checked for leading to a **legal** copy of
an intended and appropriate document. Standards documents are copyright
to the authoring body, and (alas) commonly issued only in exchange for
real money.

Any group should first decide its target readership, and not degenerate
into dealing only with a more limited range of topics. A descendant of
CLJ should cover the full range of ECMAScript and near-ECMAScript usage
- JScript in WSH, JScript in HTAs, JavaScript in Web pages and servers,
etc., and be primarily to assist the under-informed. It should not, for
example, degenerate into a coterie talking only about the internals of
the next edition of ECMAScript implementations.

Any group possessing some sort of site or forum needs a stable core
quorum of reasonably amiable maintainers. That eliminates Thomas,
unless he can find sufficient other people like himself.

I was suggesting a wiki for easy maintenance and shared
responsibility. I would expect the same daily posting we get now to
continue. I think that's an excellent service.

> Distribution of the present stale FAQ, and of its daily fragments,

If we are going to continue to have a FAQ -- and I think that RobG is
right that it's a reasonable question to ask -- then I disagree. We
should work on freshening the content, and building an infrastructure
that makes it easier to maintain without the burden falling too
heavily on one member. But I think keeping the daily posting
meanwhile would be worthwhile.

> [ ... ]
> Any group possessing some sort of site or forum needs a stable core

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would claim that such a rule
would eliminate me. Or you. If we really need to, I'm sure we can
find a way to measure reputation on the site and use that to guide
eligibility; but I would really rather not bother. If we decide to go
with a solution like this (and I have a further suggestion below) then
I would prefer to find a core of 5 - 10 volunteers who have the
authority to approve changes to the FAQ submitted by that core group
or by anyone else.

I've been thinking of an alternative to both the current XML ->
Website and the suggestions for a wiki version, and it's something
that I think might work well. What if we had the FAQ Questions (and
Answers, of course) hosted as Github pages on a community account,
maintained in a simple Markdown format appropriate for posting, but
which could also be published through the Github tools as a static
website? Obviously we'd have to rewrite the daily poster, but it
could presumably be fairly simple if the source was already in a
posting-ready format.

This would allow anyone who had FAQ suggestions, anything from typo
corrections to radical reorganizations, to send a Github pull request,
and allow any of the maintenance team to choose whether or not to
merge that request in. I would assume that when there was any
controversy about such decisions, they would be carried out in the
group.

I don't have any experience setting up anything like this. But I'm
hoping to try something this weekend just to see how feasible it might
be. I'd love to hear any suggestions, critiques, offers of help,
whatever.

It is not now; and it should be terminated, because it posts an out-of-
date document. But it was (except that the Subject should not have the
current date) excellent.

You do not disagree, since you are referring to a maintained FAQ and I
was referring to a stale one.

The present FAQ could certainly be divided into say five parts, each
with its own maintainer, maybe :
        1. The use of the newsgroup
        2. External resources
        3. ECMAScript and algorithms in ECMAscript
        4. The interaction of the HTML DOM with JScript and JavaScript
        5. Anything else, such as server javascripts, HTAs, etc.

Then each part could be posted early in its own particular day of the
European working week (Europe has about the average offset from GMT).

Carefully selected volunteers - sufficiently knowledgeable and
psychologically suitable.

I've looked at Github, without understanding it. A newbie, and it is
they for whom the FAQ should be intended, would generally not be helped.
By all means have a Github community; but not instead of anything here.

Perhaps what I was suggesting wasn't clear enough. Git is a version-
control system, somewhat different from ones like CVS and Subversion
in that there is not necessarily a centralized repository. Instead it
involves a collection of independent peers which can synchronize with
one another separately. Github is a website and web application that
adds back some centralization to that model, serving as a de facto
central host for a very large number of open source projects.

Its reach has expanded beyond traditional software systems into
documentation and other collections of versioned documents. One of
its features is that it can serve as an alternative to an HTTP server
for static sites, while still allowing easy versioning of the
content. With some of the tools provided, some templating can be
applied to add static headers, footers, sidebars, etc., to make this
static content into reasonable looking web pages, all created from
some very simple versioned documents.

It was this that I thought might be useful for us. It's not that
Github would in any way supplant our FAQ, but would simply become the
storage and hosting mechanism. The advantage would be that it would
become very easy to clone, very easy for people to make changes to
their copies and then ask the maintainers to include those changes in
the official version. The only reason for using Github would be to
simplify the sharing of these responsibilities and maintaining the
historical record of our changes. To the end user, the FAQ would
still look like either a single long document or a collection of short
ones as we choose.

For a FAQ to be a newsgroup's topic FAQ (as opposed to a posting
etiquette FAQ), it needs to be regularly posted, in one pieces, a few
pieces, or many pieces, to that newsgroup in plain-text, so that all
regulars of the newsgroup WILL see it regularly and can in that manner
be tempted to propose changes. Given an active maintainer with a
suitable personality and a fair general knowledge of the whole topic,
that works well.

I have edited such a FAQ, though its newsgroup is long gone :-
<http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/y2k_mfaq.txt>.

If the master copy of a FAQ is a plain-text file, then a new maintainer
has nothing to learn about editing it.

The CLJ FAQ degenerated when in the interest of prettiness it became a
derivative of a more webby version, which to some extent constrained the
representation of actual code.

Of course, with a pure-ASCII FAQ served as a *.TXT file generally is,
one cannot give a URL for a particular section.

One can get round that with a pure HTML FAQ, provided that there is a
simple freely-available means of converting it to plaintext without any
loss or distortion of content.

If there is a Web FAQ occupying more than one web page, there should be
a built-on means of searching just the FAQ - I think suitable search
controls are available (free?) - with a sufficiently wide input control.

But the obvious question is "Can you point us to an existing FAQ
(preferably but not necessarily on a similar topic) or similar which is
actually maintained and distributed in the proposed manner? - or can you
generate an actual example, perhaps using representative parts of the
current CLJ FAQ?".

For amusement :
178.154.243.101 avidly accesses my 403 page.
65.55.213.66 may be the next to get it.

The problem has always been finding a maintainer with the time...

I am of course completely happy to transfer access and control of the FAQ - either a redirect to a new site or SSH access as before to the box (which is underpowered and poorly connected really...) To a new author, however I would be wary transferring it to anyone without a clear mandate from the group - so controversial figures need support.

I would caution that a WIKI will require more regular maintaining to prevent spam if it's at all open, but at least can remain current.

Jim.

Even I agree with that, the major problem is not the time. If you
check the group statistic you will see how many people regularly post
here. I do not see problem the maintainer to spend some hours in
maintaining FAQ during the week.
As Thomas pointed out, before something went in FAQ, should be asked
before. It is not necessarily to be asked here. There are many
frequently asked JS questions, for which I think c.l.js has good
answers. The maintainer should follow not only c.l.js, he should be
well informed.

I agree that the person should be chosen by consensus from the
members. If there is only one maintainer, I would the future decisions
are made with consensus from the group. It means before he is going to
add something or remove to be discussed with the other members. Is it
OK for you?
According to the group statistic and if you agree with that Thomas
Lahn should be the new maintainer.

Glad you wrote in this thread, we really need new maintainer and hope
after that topic we will have new one.

Just want to support this. I am a maintainer
of an open Wiki. I suspect there are rooms
full of people being paid money to SPAM
Wikis. Opposing this requires several
maintainers, preferably in different time
zones.

A FAQ should be an edited document, with limited write access; it should
be the responsibility of a named real person or group of real persons,
or of a real-world organisation.

Jim : now that you are back : assuming such can be found, how about
appointing and empowering not only a maintainer but a spare maintainer?

All : $fish.htm, currently on my Website, is a MathJax snippet tester,
with links to the MathJax site etc. To preserve bandwidth, that file
will only work in November. MathJax is a JavaScript maths "typesetter".

I agree.

The interactivity of a wiki-application is not needed,
as such interactivity is presently available by the nature of usenet and
our NG.

Such wiki would need individual write permission and moderation anyway,
a step that in the present form of the FAQ would automagically be performed
by an actively maintaining maintainer [and probably the invisible helpers
he chooses].

Methinks, the FAQ sould better be a tree of documents,
making linking to the pertaining part by others more logical
than the present anchor method.

That's good for citing.

But for searching for an answer, or quickly reviewing, a single page or
article is best.

However, the view of the FAQ as seen when editing does not need to be
exactly the same as that presented for use; and there can be more than
one view presented for use.

There could be an indexed tree of pagelets, and a small program that
collects their bodies into a single page.

Exantlati ?

  <snip>

And we mustn't forget that an important use of the FAQ is so we can say
'Read the FAQ!' to inexperienced people who've done something
inadvisable. We don't want those people to crawl round a maze of web
pages, let alone use the search feature of a wiki : they won't know what
they're looking for.
