Assignment to outerHTML property creates a new HTML object and if succeeded,
it replaces the old one. So the m value is not changed. It's still reference
to the old HTML object which is now an orphan element.

Would the "var m" assignment not prevent it
from being a real orphan [in the sense of gabage-collectable]?

... as it can be reassigned anywhere in the DOM-tree later?

Yes to both.

It's like assigning a variable to the return value of removeChild() then
re-insert the node into the document later using appendChild() or
insertBefore(). Without saving a reference to the removed node, the node
would be a garbage.

I think would apply the same rules as to any Javascript object.

Is the Javascript-object garbage-collection the same as the DOM-tree-element
one?

DOM elements are normal Javascript objects, or should be. Someone
confirm please.

DOM objects are host objects (called exotic objects in ES6), not
ECMAScript's ordinary or standard built-in objects. The W3C defined the
DOM as a set of objects and interfaces for accessing and manipulating
document objects in a language-independent manner. The DOM presents
documents as a hierarchy of Node objects that also implement other, more
specialized interfaces.

If I write the following lines in my Chrome 47 (Linux Mint) console, I
will find the "HTMLParagraphElement" object.

   var el = document.createElement('p');
   console.log(el.constructor.prototype); // logs HTMLParagraphElement

And if I follow the prototype chain, I will find other object names that
correspond to DOM Level 4 interfaces:

HTMLParagraphElement
  HTMLElement
   Element
    Node
     EventTarget
      Object

BTW, Happy New Year!

They're normal.
A parentless but owned DOM node has a referene to a document, but the
document doesn't have a reference to it.

That node increase document's reference count by one since it needs the
document, but the document doesn't need the node so it doesn't increase the
node's reference count.

Thus, the node keeps the document alive (longer) and not become a garbage,
and the document doesn't keep the node alive and makes it a garbage.

The Document.adoptNode() should have been Node.setOwner().
The Document.importNode() should have been Node.exportToDocument().

Ex nonsenso quodlibet.

> A parentless but owned DOM node has a referene to a document,

A wannabe’s gibberish, meaning nothing.

> but the document doesn't have a reference to it.

A document never has a reference to a “DOM node”. A document is represented
as an object, that object has a property, that property has a value, and
that value can be a reference to an object that implements the Node
interface.

On the contrary, I am very thankful that such a knowledgeable person
still takes the time to help the group increase its understanding (even
if there are things he has "no time for").

Sorry, but it is not possible to accept the antisocial behaviour of Thomas Lahn and keep silent. I assume you are an "cool" guy, but it's not good when someone like you supports him just because of his knowledge, disregarding all the aggressiveness and anger that he spits on everyone all the time.

Everybody here is spending their precious spare time to try to learn and help the group, even though sometimes we make mistakes or respond in a careless way. Eventually, the result of this interaction should be what you called as "help the group increase its understanding".

I feel that the majority of the participants in this group behave in an acceptable, sociable manner, as adults need to be.

However it's been very difficult to stay here with a lunatic that tries to intimidate and let everyone down, depending on his sense of humour on that day. For instance, just after the midnight of January 1, instead of wishing a Happy New Year to the group, he responded to Aleksandro in a very arrogant and disrespectful manner. For me, that was a disturbing symptom of someone who doesn't have a healthy social life, a family, a girl-friend, whatever makes us feel more humans and tolerant with the others.

Dude, sticks and stones. If you continue to let this fellow have power over
you, he will have it. Move on, live a happy life, do not be the "effect"
of him. Be "cause" of your own well being.

I think that here I speak for all the well behaved users here. It is not
that we are personally worried at all about the channel troll, actually
we could not care less. The problem is that after being “plonked” by the
vast majority of users here and also considering how a lot of old users
have left anyway, this individual seems himself practically alone so he
can post and say anything, in many cases making newcomers ever mistake
him for some sort of authority, which he obviously is not.

I would strongly recommend to you that you do a reality check so that you do
not further make a fool of yourself in public.

And get yourself a real name. cljs is a Usenet newsgroup, not a "channel".
