You say it like you know what you're talking about but you never present
any of the problems you seem to think are obvious, nor do you explain
why a raised point is in fact pointless. How's anyone supposed to learn
from your posts when all we read is "I'm right and you're wrong"?

Instead of abstract metadiscussion, why don't you look at the question
that was asked? It was about simple replacement of the text content of a
<span> element. Some people (and I don't mean you here - you gave an
alternative solution, which is just a little clumsier) just can't give a
practical answer and, worse still, attack people who do.

What are "amorphous collection", "pointless theoretical rants", and
"abstract metadiscussion" but strawmen? They do nothing for me in
understanding why you believe only in innerHTML.

Interesting. Would you agree, then, that in the 90ies, the answer to
"how do I make a web page?" was "FrontPage Express" and that
c.i.w.a.h. as whole can retrospectively be considered am amorphous
collection of pointless theoretical rants about problems that were not
asked about?

I consider myself to be quite pragmatic[1], but I wouldn't use a truck
to fetch my morning buns. In the worst case I would stuck in a traffic
jam and arrive at the bakery after the buns were sold out. In the best
case I would get the buns for the double price (as I would have to pay
the gas).

[1] I quite like your "The pragmatic guide to HTML"
