The code
   $('variable')
is a function call where the name of the function is "$" and the single
argument is a string literal 'variable'. Some frameworks define a
function named "$".

In the code
   $function
the "$function" is an identifier starting with the "$" sign followed by
the word "function". That is a legal identifier but has no special meaning.

I thought, it was something special :-)

Well, perhaps it is.

It is sometimes murmured that this is part of jquery syntax,
but since we do think jquery is something to stay clear of,
[Martin could accidentally have ment this with 'some frameworks']
it wouldn't even do just to mention this on this NG.

So I retract the above forthwith.
