I had looked that up on Wikipedia[1], where "Tu quoque" (sorry for the
typo above) is listed as one kind of "Ad hominem" argument.

I have said that your first argument was wrong. If the first argument
is wrong, following arguments based on this argument are irrelevant. In
other words, from false assumptions anything can be concluded. If "ex
falso quodlibet" isn't a proper Latin phrase to translate that, I have
to apologize.

Well, I'm not doing a job interview with a candidate--I'm hoping to find
a *volunteer* who is willing to spend part of his free time to update
and improve the group's FAQ.

Regarding Thomas we have better evidence, namely the changes he has made
to the FAQ[2].

No, you are correct.

Yes, Tu Quoque is a relative. "Your law is bad because you've broken
it" is a kind of "Your law is bad because you are a criminal".

Still, I don't think Thomas meant both.

Be very careful when you say "false assumptions". The fallacy is to
argue from contradictory assumptions. A deduction from something that
isn't true can be perfectly good but still be irrelevent. For
instance, the deduction
"The sky is blue, therefore red things are easily spotted"
is useful on earth, but not on Mars.

And another thing : when you say ex falso quodlibet you've overlooked
the fact that I haven't deduced anything. I'm merely correcting part
of Thomas's table. Saying A is not the same as saying A, therefore B.

It's proper, though 'falso' is rather a misleading word.

Your first argument was[1]:

| Let us remind ourselves : an ad hominem argument is one that takes the
| general form :
|
| What you say is wrong because you are a/an <insult>.

This statement is wrong according to the definition of "ad hominem
argument" in the broadest sense--and I believe that Thomas used such a
general definition to classify the posts in his list. Actually I didn't
find an insult in your posts, but there were arguments against Thomas
becoming the FAQ maintainer, because of some of his character traits and
former behavior, what *might* be seen as "ad hominem argument".

Personally, I refrain from classifying your posts (or those of others,
for that matter).

No, you made a facetious post that explains very succinctly why
crowdsourcing you to host the faq is a really bad idea.

In theory, it is possible. The FAQ for comp.lang.javascript that I am
proposing is maintained via Subversion (for now), and there can be more than
one committer.

In practice, I do not like the idea of working together with someone who has
abandoned his job and the target of his work for no other reason than being
pissed off by comments – unless I have missed a *reasonable* explanation as
to that –, and is now trying to make money from doing nothing about it for
the last three years, and trying to have the work belittled or ignored that
I have done in the meantime without any funds but my own (and, may I say,
with exceptions, not a lot of moral, technical or content support from those
who should benefit from that).

I can assure you that FAQ maintenance has cost me almost nothing so far but
a little free time now and then. While I agree that people willing to
support the cause could donate (e.g. via PayPal) *once considerable work has
been done* (and I would be willing to make that possible), I think
crowdfunding FAQ maintenance *in advance* is way over the top, put politely.

To me, maintaining a FAQ is a voluntary service to the online community, to
your peers and like-minded people; it is like a calling. It is _not_ a job
to make a living from.

Because you have not indicated what you believe "ad hominem" to actually
means, the counting, like so much of what you post, is not useful.

How can anyone have problems with spelling when the web is awash with
applications that come with spelling checkers?

I too would struggle with "conscientiously" without the spelling checker.

With the spelling checker, all my words are impeccably spelled, although
they may not be the rite words...

While I made the mistake,
it was John, not me, dat had problems with it.

His spell checker could not help him in this case.

Under Netiquette, discussings someone's linguistical errors is considered
impolite in NGs that are not about language.

ducoment.write(); would be on topic.

On the other hand, confirming which of two different words was
intended is something a FAQ Editor *must* be willing to do.

E.g conscientiously or consciously ? They were both possible.

Not if the error impacts the meaning.

I have seen where a poster has apparently missed out a "not". I
will post something like:
          >I do agree.
               ^
I assume you meant to put "not" here and responding as if
you did.
          <remainder of response>

I have seen where people have confused "prescribe" and
"proscribe" -- they are near-antonyms -- and if I saw something like
that, I would be querying.

If it does not, then no comment. You have one error and one odd
usage in the above-quoted sentence, but it does not matter as your
meaning is clear. If the discussion had not veered to the issue of
correcting errors, I would not have written anything about them.

Most of us have never shown this slightest willingness either, because it
was never asked to us in the context of FAQ-maintainer.

So go and ask PE.

Don't confuse this with agreement to accept a majority vote as the gospel
outside the FAQ context discussion.

Convincing argument is much better than majority in finding agreement.

But not sufficient. It is also necessary that the FAQqer should heed
the comments made, and make changes where appropriate.

Before appointing anyone as FAQqer, we should see and like examples of
his or her work, bearing in mind that a FAQ's chief purpose should be to
help newcomers.

You are not maintainer of the newsgroup FAQ; that requires the general
assent of the newsgroup, and a willingness to be guided by the members
of the group.

You are, instead, a plagiarist in breach of the principles of copyright
