But AISB, the question is what one considers more important. Is it going a
longer way to devise the perfectly easy, future way to maintain the FAQ?
Or is it reusing the existing content and data with much less effort so that
there is a usable FAQ right now (that can be improved later, even rather
easily transformed to Markdown-ish formats with XSLT)?
Both approaches have their advantages, but in a (so far) one-man project I
certainly prefer the latter approach. Insofar improving an existing FAQ is
fundamentally different from writing script libraries or doing research,
although JSX and the ES Matrix are (so far) one-man projects (with valuable
contributions from others) as well.

AISB, I am doing this iteratively, and since I have begun to follow SVN
recommendations [1] more strictly recently, I try to keep my commits atomic
(also so that those interested can better see what I am doing).

Yes, see
<http://PointedEars.de/scripts/faq/cljs/index.xml> and the changelog.
I did not expect it to be that easy, though. I was experimenting tonight
with an “include” element¹, when I remembered to have seen the “Process XML
inclusions” setting in Eclipse WTP (whose XML editor turns out to be very
helpful) [2] while setting up local Validation there. A quick Google search
for “xml include” showed the better solution [3] then.
PointedEars
___________
¹ The “include” element would have had a template in the XSLT stylesheet
to use its “src” attribute, which was passed as parameter to the
“document()” function. That did work, basically.

It's from a few years ago, but I don't think the script has been changed much since then. Garrett and Bart should have access to the most recent version. Anyway, it would be probably be best to just scrap it and write the new autoposter from scratch. Having the FAQ in Markdown format would reduce the effort to a few lines of code. XML+XSLT would work fine, too, but obviously require more code (in the XSL templates). - stefan

I'm not convinced that Thomas Lahn will follow that tradition, so you have a fair point there. This problem could be nicely worked around by having more than one person who can edit, expand and correct the FAQ. A wiki has been suggested as one possible way to accomplish this, and a GitHub repository has also been mentioned. I would be strongly in favor of one of these, rather than having a single person as a dictator (and a controversial choice at that). Should a distibuted authorship of the FAQ (wiki or GitHub) not get a majority vote, then Thomas Lahn has my reluctant approval. He has the technical knowledge, and nobody else has volunteered, so he wins by default. I can only hope that as FAQ maintainer, he will repect other people's suggestions more than he does in his postings to the group. - stefan

I do not know why Microsoft doesn't support Newsgroups, but many other Email Clients doest it. > The idea is that users only need a browser to do everything including > writing documents and storing them online in the cloud. I would like to see some analytics for the FAQ page(s). If the hit count is low then it may not be worthwhile maintaining the document.

To gather the metrics that you are discussing then you would need either a feedback mechanism or a star rating. Considering that several people here are more worried about excessive html and css, as well as the simplest format for the FAQ, I doubt whether they would want to add such complexity for gathering this information. I just googled 'How do I format a Date object with javascript?' FAQ entry 5.1. Google returned this as the 185th search result. The top 2 sites were stackoverflow and (heaven forbid) w3schools. Picking another random topic from the FAQ, 'How can I disable the back button in a web browser?' (entry 10.1). Google returned the jibbering FAQ entry at number 418. Another entry 'How can I see in javascript if a web browser accepts cookies?' (entry 9.6) - Google is 365. Do you see a trend here? The FAQ isn't getting the hits so why bother maintaining something that very few people know about? I recommend that the FAQ should only contain section 1,2,3 and 14. The rest should be discarded because other sites are more dynamic with the help and have more up to date information. These sections relate only to the newsgroup and therefore wouldn't need to be maintained nor updated.

I think it would be better to keep the FAQ as it is but put a very visible warning at the start, saying that the FAQ is not being maintained and that the last update was October 8, 2010. This warning could refer to StackOverflow for example. The warning should be accompanied with its own time stamp. Since people may follow links that point to individual entries and thereby miss the warning, perhaps a repeating background image with the word "OUTDATED" might be in order, though that's more controversial. The main reason for keeping the FAQ as is but with a warning is that there is a large number of copies of the FAQ in various formats. You can see this if you google with a quoted string like "How do I format a Date object with javascript" Some of them carry a time stamp from 2012 because they record FAQ entries posted to the gropu by the FAQ serve. And in case someone finds such page, it's fair to give chance of finding out the situation if the reader follows a link to the complete FAQ. And the auto-posting should be stopped. -- Yucca, http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/

That does not follow. Since portions of the FAQ are posted here
every day, there is not much need to go to a Website.

Non sequitur, There is no reason to expect Googlers to use the actual subject line of an existing FAQ entry, especially when the latter was composed on the wrong side of the Atlantic (or, in your case, Pacific). >I recommend that the FAQ should only contain section 1,2,3 and 14. The >rest should be discarded because other sites are more dynamic with the >help and have more up to date information. The other sections contain, largely, material which has for a considerable while been contemplated and fettled by experts, some of whom can also write good English. Many other sites contain the newly- minted erroneous witterings of the infantile. Information should not be discarded because it is old; only because it is wrong. Newbies, and the absent-minded, still need the old stuff. -- (c) John Stockton, nr London, UK. Mail via homepage. Turnpike v6.05 MIME. Newbies, and the absent-minded, still need the old stuff. But there is still a question of what belongs in the FAQ for our particular newsgroup. I would not expect that a question once included would not necessarily remain forever. Would we really want to include questions these days specific to Netscape 4, for instance? Clearly this would not be the place to reiterate every bit of information from the ECMAScript 262 specification, nor all the material contained in, say, Flanagan's latest _Definitive Guide_. The obvious list is starts with the questions that have been often asked in the group. I have no objections to additional entries which might help further clarify those answers, but the questions actually asked are a good start. And at the moment, the questions currently in the FAQ are a reasonable start. But when we finally figure out the maintainer question, I would expect questions to be added and removed to modernize the FAQ. -- Scott
