#22765 — Obscure a button ?

SubjectObscure a button ?
Message-ID<bkdg8uFrk9uU1@mid.individual.net>
Hi:

    Using JS/ES, I would like to 'obscure' a button in the empty are of a
page that only *I* can easily locate and click on. If the user glides over
the button, I don't want any hint of this button to show up.

    So, given an <input.type="button" />, how does one define its CSS
characteristics so that it is active/enabled and ready to be clicked but not
seen ?

Thanks,

Hi:

    This is not generally a CSS question. I will be using JS/ES for the
onclick action of this button. It is in the onclick function of this button
that I'll be taking other actions. But, I need the style-wise stuff to
obscure the button to begin with.

A button you cannot see is not a button,
it is like an invisible image showing a mountain.

<div style = 'background-color:transparent;
              width:50px;height:20px;z-index:1234;
              position:absolute;left:200px;top:100px;'
     onclick = 'alert("You found me.")'>
</div>

I don't know what is ment by "tomorrow" in this global NG,
me posting shortly before midnight, 23:44:15 +0100, my time.

============================

It would be damned difficult to test without a temporary borderline,
even for the borderliners on this NG.

<div style = 'background-color:transparent;
             width:50px;height:20px;z-index:1234;
             position:absolute;left:200px;top:100px;
             border:dotted 1px #777;'
    onclick = 'alert("You found me.")'>
</div>

=============================

An alternative is to use an image,
now I use a minute change to the cursor as a mouseover-hint:

<img src='mountain.gif'
        style = 'opacity:0;
             filter:alpha(opacity=0); /* for MSIE8 or older */
             width:50px;height:20px;z-index:1234;
             position:absolute;left:200px;top:100px;
             cursor:alias;'
    onclick = 'alert("You found the nonexistant mountain.")'>

there even being no absolute need for mountain.gif to exist,
but that most consoles will throw an image-not-found error.

Hi Evertjan:

    I tried to send you an email message with an attached file but your
email address was rejected.

    (i.e., e..j.w.hannivoort@inter.nl.net )

    Anyway, your <div> solution worked perfectly.

Thank you !

I would try to avoid that. Even if the button is invisible a user could
accidentially click it, the user could have CSS turned off (or using his
own styles), and at least the button will show up in the HTML source
code, where a user could find out what the button is doing and trigger
that by other means.

As I understand it, you're generating your website dynamically. This
offers any easy opportunity to include the button in a document only if
some special condition is met, e.g. if the requester has a specific IP
address. If your IP doesn't change too often, you can use a simple
check. Another option might be check for a certain cookie which you can
set for your browser(s) only. Note, that both methods are still
"vulnerable", but depending on your purpose either may suffice.

Anyway, none of this is OT in this newsgroup. For CSS related questions
you might consult comp.infosystems.www.authoring.stylesheets, for server
side processing a newsgroup which deals with your language (XHarbor,
IIRC) resp. something more general (comp.infosystems.www.authoring.misc?).

Actually, I meant OnT (=on topic), not OT (= off topic).
