Exactly. I've been reading the standard up and down, looking for my
mistake. I was really perplexed, because _either_ of the operands should
have forced a string result, even with the hint for ToPrimitive for
native objects defaulting to Number. That what I was looking at wasn't
an addition at all never entered my mind. The only consolation is that
"{} + ..." is very unlikely to occur outside of an expression in a
normal program.

And exactly how many normal programs do you run across? I keep coming
across some fairly abnormal ones myself! :-)

Consider using a single <table> element without any HTML borders, and use CSS to style the bordering, etc., that you need so that it looks like three tables. Apologies for inadvertent belatedness; I thought that it had been sent. -- (c) John Stockton, nr London UK Reply address via Home Page. news:comp.lang.javascript FAQ <http://www.jibbering.com/faq/index.html>. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-index.htm> jscr maths, dates, sources. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/> TP/BP/Delphi/jscr/&c, FAQ items, links.
