    Here is what I'm doing (bit its HTML and CSS ands OT)

... and then below this puts the 'Messages' in the middle of the <hr> line 
*but* the drop-down displays 'underneath' the hr line and is partly obscured 
by it.

    It works *great* and the drop-down list is NOT obscured.

    I'll examine your source and try it on my development system.
