----------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQ Topic - How can I access the client-side filesystem? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Security means that by default you can't. In a more restricted environment, there are options. For example, using LiveConnect to connect to Java with Netscape, and using the FileSystemObject in IE. Check Google Groups archives [ref 1] for previous posts on the subject. <URL: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/z9ty6h50%28VS.85%29.aspx> <URL: http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-10-1998/jw-10-apptowin32.html> References: ----------- [1] http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.javascript/topics The complete comp.lang.javascript FAQ is at http://jibbering.com/faq/ -- The sendings of these daily posts are proficiently hosted by http://www.pair.com.

That is incorrect, because one can. The FAQ entry author, with a limited viewpoint, presumed that the JavaScript would be running in a Web page served by HTTP from a remote machine. Common, but not always so. One should not start with a false statement and then try to erode it. There is a word "usually". > In a more restricted >environment, there are options. For example, using LiveConnect to >connect to Java with Netscape, That last word above seems out-of-date. > Check Google Groups archives [ref 1] >for previous posts on the subject. That currently gives a choice of 185132 Topics to consider, most of which may be span of daily FAQ sections (that date is annoying). Further searching will only be useful, AFAICS, if one can predict a set of words used in good answers which are not commonly used in irrelevant articles. -- (c) John Stockton, Surrey, UK. ¬@merlyn.demon.co.uk Turnpike v6.05 MIME. My <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/linxchek.htm> is undoubtedly a Web page. A browser automatically makes a local copy, and displays it; and that thus-displayed page cannot read the local filesystem. But, with menu File, Save [Page] As, one gets a local copy which the browser can read and display; and that can then read the local filesystem. Try it yourself - that might at least help to debug the instructions. H'mmm - can a cached copy be found and read as a file, independently of its cachedness, and what does it then do if asked to read the local filesystem? My <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/programs/32-bit/seek.hta> is presumably a Web page. Firefox will fetch it and display it in "View Source" manner. But MS IE 8 can fetch it and display it in an HTML GUI manner. Press the SEEK button and it will read the local disc and display information from it, with a short delay. Usually, use WIPE between SEEKs. The "input type=text" element needs a folder reference, not a file one. Y is short for "Yesterday". That is freshly tested on the PC on which it was written. It might be necessary for others to import and emplace my seakfyle.js; I cannot tell from here. And if you use the link "Instructions", you may find it useful (in which case please take and use a true local copy (of both)). >Perhaps you should complain that the wording is a bit obscure. ><FAQENTRY> The wordings are generally obscure or capable of misinterpretation. Likewise IE9 in Win 7 64-bit; but in that Win 7 machine the 32-bit "Win XP mode" runs IE 8 which behaves as double-quoted (>>) above, Is that just for the default settings, or just for your current settings, or is what you describe the only possibility for attempted direct view? Could it be that immediate execution is now prohibited on security grounds, while one can still save the page and then run it independently of the Web in the usual manner for an HTA (IIRC, it needs an include file to actually work)? I was not actually planning or positively expecting direct execution to work; and I'll block it if necessary for server bandwidth reasons. Users should keep and run a local copy of what might be considered a useful tool. -- (c) John Stockton, nr London UK Reply address via Home Page. news:comp.lang.javascript FAQ <http://www.jibbering.com/faq/index.html>. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-index.htm> jscr maths, dates, sources. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/> TP/BP/Delphi/jscr/&c, FAQ items, links.
