To me, the dialect analogy seems very useful. I'm writing one program that is meant to run on several different browsers, including at least one recent browser on each of several platforms. What should I call the language in which I'm writing it? Thinking of it as being in a language called something like "Javascript", but having to be limited to the common subset of several dialects is a practical model. I can investigate questions like "Does the IE 9 dialect support this feature?". I don't care about the IE 8 dialect because that is not one of the browsers I plan to support. How would my thinking about my program be improved, preferably simplified, by dropping the dialect model? What language should I think of it as being written in? Patricia

Incidentally, I answered this from the point of view of the assumption that most Windows XP users do use IE. It is worth noting that I do most of my development and initial testing on a Windows XP machine - I use Firefox as my preferred browser. Patricia

What would "support" entail? Unless one is using an unstable technology or has leapt feet-first onto the HTML 5 train, IE 8 is a relatively easy browser to support. Of the browsers that I have tested, IE 5 is "difficult". Regardless, one should not be determining "browsers" to exclude; one should be determining "features"--and corresponding detection--to exclude.

The analysis has to start from looking at features, and deciding which ones are needed. In some contexts, one can make a feature-by-feature choice. In my case, I'm writing an application that would not be useable on a given browser unless *all* the features the application uses are supported. If the total work and added code complexity to make the application work on a given browser is not justified, there is no point in putting in any workarounds for that browser. Patricia

There is the additional issue of an old copyright on "JavaScript", but that's minor. -- Scott

If you use 'javascript' when making a general remark that applies to JavaScript, JScript, ActionScript, etc then he will call you ignorant, a fool, an idiot, and a troll. I have enough confidence in my own ability, experience, and education that I tend to assume that someone who calls me ignorant or a fool just doesn't know me very well. I do feel that several newsgroups, this one included, are dying of impoliteness. Imagine someone trying Usenet out for the first time. If they get a kind, helpful, welcoming response they may stay around, ask more questions, and as they learn start answering questions. That is how technical discussion fora stay alive. If they get verbally stomped on, they are going to take their questions, and their future answers, elsewhere. That is how technical discussion fora die. A person asking a question has no "right" to any response, but the existing participants in a newsgroup have no "right" to interesting questions to answer or to the contributions of new answerers. I do think everyone, in any social interaction, has a right to respect, politeness, and consideration just because they are human beings. Patricia

Quite right. It is a useful thing to know if one wants to find and read the standard; most browsers seem to follow ECMA 5th Edn pretty well now, and (except maybe on a controlled intranet) it would be unwise to use any feature not in ECMA 5 or one of the early drafts of a successor. ECMA 5 can be difficult in parts; but it is easy to find answers to a fair proportion of questions in it. TL is on record as not having read/understood/realised/learned an obvious way in which two fairly simple parts of it of it could be used in conjunction. A FAQ maintainer needs to be literate in ordinary good English. A FAQ maintainer needs to be benevolent and tolerant of the errors of others. A FAQ maintainer needs to be good at communicating with the less well informed. A FAQ maintainer needs to be capable of receiving a specific question and synthesising a more generic question which answer both that and also related questions. The first of those rules out almost everyone educated in what has in the past been part of the British Empire and Colonies, except for some Britons over 65 years old, and rules out those from large countries inside and outside Europe. It admits those from small European countries like Denmark & Norway. As an example of the last of those not occurring : Long ago I asked here how to write a computed text string into an existing page. The answer was to use a DIV (or a SPAN; I forget which) with a unique ID, then to use some specific code like document.getElementById(ID).innerHTML = S. That code works, of course, and I used it; but it would have been far better to write about the various ways of getting a reference to a general element and the various ways of using such a reference, ending up with examples including the above. I like to think I'm reasonably literate in my native language, despite being only 63 and educated, except for my doctorate, in England. Patricia
