i do not know of any crossbrowser way of accessing the filesystem
*folders* in that way, but if you know the folder structure and contents
in advance you can easily get to the file contents with a plain
XMLHttpRequest (as if it were any web resource). you could, however,
have the folder and file listings scripted in advance for every
installation. alternatively, you could go with browser specific
functionality like IE's FileSystemObject for this. but be aware a
kitty will die if you do this.

given your requirements you could do that in plain javascript with very
little coding, really. but yes. AngularJS is basically client side and
you could solve that easily once you got the folder thing sorted
out. there's a quick introductory video tut on their page

You do not appear to know anything at all. You do not even know that you
don't which is, of course, the core of the problem.

Not everywhere anymore.

Instead of making bad jokes you should have told about restrictions with
file:// in MSHTML. But then again, what else to expect from you.

Curious that Google would ship such obvious junk requiring proprietary
attributes when it was their Ian Hickson who helped editing HTML5 so that it
supported custom attributes with “data-” prefix as a standards-compliant
approach. Curioser still that their example claims to be HTML5 when it
clearly is not Valid. And if that was not bad enough, they are using
jQuery. I would not be too surprised if Google Groups – deeply flawed
both on the client and server side – was written using AngularJS.

But then again, what else to expect from you.

I am speaking of files and folders in a more generic sense. I just need to setup a data store that the app can load which a framework like SproutCore allows.

Ya, the more I think about this, the more I would agree. Using a framework might be overkill for this, but then learning a framework tends to go better when one can start with something simple and the benefits of knowing a framework well can pay off when a more complex problem comes along.

I went to the AngularJS chatroom on freenode and asked about this as well. Yes, it does appear to be possible, but it looks like it would also involve using node.js as well.

see? you said you needed no persistent storage! :-)

but yes it would be easy to layout such a tree structure with
the individual filenames as leaves in, for example, json or even as a
.js import, separate for each install. maybe generated with a script
from the folder structure. that's still not a proper data store, but it
would do the job.

true. but keep in mind some frameworks tend to get messy or in the way
when things get complicated.

> but it looks like it would also involve using node.js as well.

only if you would want to access the file system with nodejs'
apis. that's in fact what i would have proposed if installing extra
components were an option.

I would suggest a link on the desktop to the HTML document in question,
unless you want to have all the application code in one HTML document.

No framework needed, then.

Use relative URIs to the .js resource containing the data, then.

No framework needed.

You cannot only *post to Usenet* on Google, you know.
