#18221 — Firefox update caused a syntax error in a script

The "Greased Webcomic Manager" is a "greasemonkey" script that broke with
the update of Firefox from 16.0.2 to 17.0. Firefox's "error console" now
shows a syntax error on line 1061. i.e.:

   TN.gwm.css = <><![CDATA[

which is just past the halfway mark down this script file:

   http://userscripts.org/scripts/review/74760

That's beyond my limited understanding of Javascript, so could anybody
tell me why the syntax is bad? I'm asking because a reviewer noted that
the script had broken seven weeks back but the developer hasn't appeared
yet, so I'm hoping that a simple patch will fix it.

That much is obvious, because there is no “Javascript”.

The right-hand side (RHS) is part of ECMAScript for XML (E4X, ECMA-357),
which allows you to use XML markup verbatim in ECMAScript-based scripts,
resulting in an XML object (XML instance). The first line of the RHS is the
start-tag of an anonymous element followed by the left-hand side delimiter
of a CDATA section.

<http://www.w3.org/TR/2008/REC-xml-20081126/#sec-cdata-sect>

Unfortunately, E4X never had cross-implementation (and thus cross-browser)
support, and support has been disabled in (Mozilla) JavaScript for non-
privileged code (such as GreaseMonkey scripts) in Firefox 17. The feature
is going to be removed from the codebase in Firefox 20:

<https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/E4X>

Your From header field value is invalid; please fix.

Thanks. Googling around that told me how to re-enable it. In
about:config, set javascript.options.xml.content to true. I hope that the
developer finds a fix before Firefox 20.

hmmm, I have several extensions installed in Firefox, I'm aware extensions have some min/max version of the app they work for, so to avoid the hassle you have, I simply disable automatic updates :) , I do my own updates manually, when I know my extensions work there.
