Hey everyone,

I use JavaScript in my work daily so I am very pleased to have found this google group. I have noticed there is a serious amount of Spam however, is there nothing that can be done to keep the board tidying ;)

Kind regards,

Matt

Why do you think this usenet group has anything to do with google? It
does not. If you use a proper newsreader and subscribe to a proper
newsfeed you won't see any spam either; I don't.

I use a "proper" newreader (Thunderbird) and I subscribe through a real
NNTP service. I see lots of spam.

I also see their failed attempt to combat the spam, as a bunch of cancel
messages which double the amount of spam ;-)

The rest of your point remains, this is not a google group.

comp.lang.javascript is NOT a Google Group,
it is a Usenet Newsgroup.

Please do not use Google to post here,
Google is very buggy,
use a dedicated News Server,
and install a decent newsreader.

Keep your lines shorter than 76 characters,
decent newsreaders do dit for you automagically.

Make yourself a signature under a line with --spacereturn

... and of course, RDBF.

You're right, they don't make it clear.

Most (nearly all, AFAICT) the spam here comes through Google, so a
good many people have their newsreaders set to block anything from
that source.

So...you need a newsreader. For a low-cost one, check Forte Agent
(www.forteinc.com/agent). Thunderbird (www.mozilla.org/thunderbird).
There are lots of others.

For a server, check eternal september (www.eternal-september.org).
It's free. You have to register with them, and they will send you a
userid and password to put into your newsreader. They offer all the
text newsgroups, but not binaries. And they screen out *lots* of spam.
I do see some spam here (mostly selling prescription drugs without a
prescription, all of which come through Google), less than I would
otherwise. Again, others are available, search for them.

I don't know when it started, but now they also carry binaries, at least
alt.binaries.food is in there. I think e-s has a limit of 1MB for single
binary attachments, don't know if there's also a daily quota

Personally I use MT-NewsWatcher, and have for 20 years or so.

I'm on news.individual.net, they charge €10/year which is not much. It
always seems to work.

My apologies guys, I will use a newsreader from now on. Google does not make this clear!

Mozilla Thunderbird and SeaMonkey MailNews are missing from the list. So is
KNode.

IIRC, MT-Newswatcher is not Unicode-aware; neither is Forté *Free* Agent.

I wonder when this list was compiled.

The agreed standard recommendation for Usenet is 72, not 76.

The newsgroup FAQ says
Format lines to 72 characters; indent with 2-4 spaces (not tabs).

Please do not recommend breaches of accepted convention, and READ THE
FAQ - it is, after all, regularly posted here piece-wise.
