#12720 — Select box with a text input field

Is it possible to create a select box that also has an input field?
That is, something where a user can either select a value from the
list or type a custom value. I've been googling this, but everything
I've found is 2 separate fields: a select box and a text input field
next to or below it.

And that's what you have to do, there's no HTML element that does
this. Some Javascript library (jQuery, for one) have canned scripts
that create these things.

     Not that I know of.

     I suggest that you just use both and tie them together
appropriately. If you select, then the value gets put in the textbox.
If you change the textbox value, then the appropriate select box value
is set or, if it is not in the list of selections, an other selection
is set.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Gene:  (and Larry):

    This type of input control is know as a 'combobox".

    It can be constructed under javascript. Here's one of many links:

Googling for "editable combobox" has given me a lot of hits with
examples, but they all seem very complicated (I'm a newbie at
javascript and jQuery). It will take me some time to digest and
understand what they are doing. They're all tied into their CSS and
autocomplete, and support for smart phones, and who knows what else.

Basically I have a django template like this:

     <select name="event_type">
         {% for type in event_type_options %}
             <option value="{{ type }}" {% ifequal type filters.
0.value %}selected{% endifequal %}>{{ type }}</option>
         {% endfor %}
     </select>

And that produces html ike this:

    <select name="event_type">
        <option value="RecipeCreated" selected>RecipeCreated</option>
        <option value="RecipeChanged" >RecipeChanged</option>
    </select>

And I want to modify it so that the first field in the select box the
user can type in any text they want. Don't want autocomplete or styles
(the app already has them), or anything fancy.

You can emulate one:

This is not what I am looking for. This creates a text input field
separate from the select box. I am looking for a select box that also
has an input field. That is, something where a user can either select
a value from the list or type a custom value.

Then inevitably, the solutions you find will either be seriously
complicated, or defective in some circumstances.

I'll compare it with losing an arm, and getting a prosthetic
replacement. If the replacement is to work as well as the original
then it will necessarily be very complicated, even though your arm
looks quite simple in what it does.

If you go for the simple arm, then don't get upset if it behaves like
a javelin-thrower when you were trying to eat a pea with a fork.

That control does not exist in html. You need to have a
textbox/combobox and javascript. The coding for such has been around
since the DHTML days.
