#16851 — chess applet

As you can see the chess applet from the firm Chessbase works correctly only
with Internet Explorer.
http://www.jmrw.com/Chess/Keres/base.htm

It was created long ago when IE was the dominant browser.

I am going and try to make it works with Firefox.

The most important thing is to make the scrolling of the moves ok.
For the figurines apprar instead of the letter it is less important.
For the sounds I know how to do it.

Pretty difficult I think.

Could you give me advices on how to begin this task?

Thanks

jmrw

You're modifing some else code -- that you can see it makes it copyright.
Posting it is publication.

The first step is to get permission from the copyright holder.

I have done modifications years ago and the firm Chessbase did'nt worry
about it

The proof is that they wrote this article on their website after these
modifications

So you were rude before. Does that mean you may be rude again? The people
that commented on it could well be ignorant of the copyright issues. And
if it is to their liking then it should go on their site not yours.

It is simple curtesy to ASK permission to post your modification BEFORE the
fact.

Which of the recent 21 items mentioned there am I suppose to look at.

And that is not proof in any case for the reason I mentioned. It might
also have been an outsider's comment not from the site owners.

As you like, but it would probably be less work and more useful to write
the application from scratch, in a browser-independent way.

That depends on the software license. Assuming it was not a free software
license (or some other permissive license):

What applet? Applets, i.e. Java applications embedded on web pages would
be off-topic here, and besides I don't see any applet on the page you
mentioned.

And you're not saying what is wrong with it. It looks like a fairly
simple page where chess moves can be shown graphically.

> I am going and try to make it works with Firefox.

It seems to work on Firefox too. Differently, but the differences are
layout and styling etc. issue, not

> The most important thing is to make the scrolling of the moves ok.

First, define "ok". Then design and implement the scrolling.

> For the figurines apprar instead of the letter it is less important.

The page seems to use font face tricks to make letters look like chess
pieces, instead of properly using chess piece characters. And it
probably uses IE-only web font technique (EOT). Nothing to do with
JavaScript, really.

Maybe I used wrong words

There are two files of js :
http://www.jmrw.com/Chess/Keres/basej0.js
and
http://www.jmrw.com/Chess/Keres/basej0c.js

Moi, je n'ai pas IE. What (which) behaviour ?
I suppose something sliding, no? (un déplacement visible)

Le gars te dit que ça n'a pas de réelle importance, la preuve : ça ne
m'a jamais géné
The guy tells you that it does not really matter.
The proof : I was never been embarrassed in Firefiox's mode

définis ce que tu penses être OK
et réalise la glissade de la pièce (DW est ton ami)

S'il pouvait il y avoir une petite explosion lors d'une capture (avec
bruit assorti) !
If there could be a small explosion at a capture (with sound attached)!

With Internet Explorer each time you press on a button, a cursor moves on
this move and if necessary teh page scroll.
