But the OP says that the web files come straight from shared discs, not
from an HTTP web server.

I missed that.

A bad idea, as, without servitude, how can we users be the masters?

With no web server, Windows Explorer can return a list of files
containing a user's search string. Windows 7 made it more tedious to
do so than it was in Win XP.

The list of returned files won't be in a web page, but the files can
be opened by double-clicking.

<http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/linxchek.htm> does what you perhaps
mean,; it spiders the site (in an iframe) and /inter alia/ searches for
a 'Shibboleth'.

If similar code were implemented as an HTA (restricting it to Internet
Explorer), there would be no need to provide a directory file. For that
(without the search-in-file, which would be easy enough to add), see
<http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/programs/32-bit/seakfyle.htm> and its
adjacent ZIP file.

Your quoted material does not say whether the only HTML documents on the
drive are those in the Web site, and does not say whether the entire
sure can be followed by using only HTML links present in the loaded
pages (linxchek does not, for example, follow connections created by
pressing buttons).

You should consider whether the string search is to be by literal match,
or to use a more versatile RegExp match - or to offer both.

Is there anything to prevent you from running a lightweight server on
this computer to serve up these same documents? There are plenty of
options available, things like nginx, lighthttpd, Resin, Jetty, and
several that use Javascript as their chief language, such as node.js.
One of these, suitably configured, would allow you to continue to
serve the same documents, but give you additional capabilities such as
request tracking, easier indexing, and, to your point, a possibility
of adding general searching.

Although Thomas pointed out a possible plan of attack with client-side
scripting, the simplest solutions, in my mind, would involve creating
one of these servers and then running some sort of crawler to scan and
index your documents. For instance, in node.js, there are several
modules that hook into Apache Lucene, or to C ports of Lucene. Those
would give you powerful search capabilities.
