That is not the case.

You were wanted to maintain the FAQ. Instead, you created a copy on your own site. I have no problem with that.

That you cannot control yourself over written medium says a lot about you. Such hostile and abusive behavior is intolerable. I will not tolerate it on the Github project.

A liar is a person who says one thing and does another. You have stated
your public support for me as FAQ maintainer – *regardless* where the FAQ
may be hosted (and I have contacted both Jim Ley and you several times via
e-mail, and suggested alternatives, and got no response at all). The record
shows. Now that because no alternative was left I did what was expected of
me in the way I did it, and within the last year I have done work with the
help of contributors, you have not been and you are not supporting me, and
you have been caught saying that this work does not exist. You are a liar.

A fraudster is a person who cheats others into giving them things for
purposes where those things are not used or required for those purposes.
You have asked at first that a FAQ maintainer be funded (I believe the
figure was around US$ 500). I know from experience that FAQ maintanence
does not require funds, it just requires free time. You would have been a
fraudster.

A thief is a person who takes the property of others without asking. I have
invested considerable time and other resources into making the FAQ for
comp.lang.javascript what it is now (see the changelog). The parts that
have not been contributed by others are my work. The parts that have been
contributed by others belong to them. You are suggesting to take those
parts without even asking me or them. If you go through with that, you will
be a thief.

As simple as that.

I proposed an idea for crowdfunding. Maintaining the FAQ is work. No fraud there.

False. The FAQ is by and for the group and for the public at large. It is not yours. Not even what you've contributed.

That's wrong thinking. The rest of the group can work on dealing with contributions. I won't take any from you. Maybe you can try again with a different username and consider treating people like people instead of objects.

Regardless, your hatred is intolerable.

So the _community_ content will now be subject to what _you_ tolerate? if that is going to be the case, I'd like to see something formally written on what you intend to tolerate and how this is going to impact potential submissions...

I get to decide who I don't want to deal with.

I won't deal with someone who is hateful and nasty and abusive as Thomas Lahn.

Scott will try to get time to work on automated postings to the NG. And there is more work to do for getting app hosting for that.

I have gotten the domain name for a centralized FAQ. The FAQ is still source on Github so anyone can fork it. Thomas doesn't want to join and now wants to claim copyright over changes he's made, so those changes can't go into this open-source project.

At least I am honest. I say what I think, and I do what I say. With you,
all bets are off. You do not even understand where you are posting to, the
medium you are using then (hint: it is _not_ the Web).

I am sure people will be delighted about the additional *unsolicited*

Yes, you are.

You don't like the open source Github project. I get it. Rude replies to in personal email about that and hateful posts on the NG. Clear as day.

Do as you wish with your copy of the FAQ.

You don't get anything at all.

I do not need your permission. I have had the consent and support of
several regulars already before you came back. Your problem is that,
unfortunately, until now you have forgotten to do a reality check.

The FAQ is not yours, so you cannot give that permission.

ACK.

> Who's the rights to FAQ?

Due to lack of an exhaustive list of contributors, everybody and nobody at
the same time. And as we have discussed before, that is a/the problem here.
Contrary to common misconception, the subscribers or contributors of a
newsgroup are _not_ a legal entity simply because neither is well-defined.

A reasonable way to resolve this without a license is to assume that the
parts contributed by a person continue to belong to them even after
publication. He who maintains such a FAQ, then, is merely the keeper of the
intellectual property thus made publicly available; he keeps it, updates it,
and improves it so that his peers can continue to benefit from it.

There are better ways to resolve this that I am going to investigate, and
will implement for the FAQ for comp.lang.javascript if and when I am sure
that they cannot and will not be abused in order to steal intellectual
property, or, in general, to use it only for one's own benefit.

You have no right to write or edit a FAQ for comp.lang.javascript, since
you have not been generally agreed by the users of comp.lang.javascript
to be anything like a suitable person.

The first hurdle, at which you have fallen, is to be manifestly usually
amiable.

You can write a JavaScript FAQ of your own, but that will need to stand
or fall by its own merits, if any.

For that matter, nobody has agreed that you are anything like a suitable
person either. How dare you to have a copy of the original FAQ at your
site, then?

No, it will not have to. You have neither been paying attention nor have

Nobody (perhaps), including me (certainly). The copy on my site is
manifestly a copy - it does not even contain, AFAIR, my name. The only
link to it from my site has an explicit statement that it is a copy.

I *never* care to read your material. But sometimes I do read it. Your
understanding of English is not as good as you think it is.

You can try to deceive yourselves. You have published a so-called
“Annotated newsgroup JavaScript FAQ” containing contributions from other
people, which is nothing else than an edited copy. Just like my “FAQ for
comp.lang.javascript” (note the wording), but in your case it remains
uncertain if you have obtained permission to publish those contributions.

The copy of the FAQ is at <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/$clj-faq.htm>.
The js-faq-a page is an annotated copy.

Annotation is not editing. The material on a white background is an
exact reproduction (E&OE) of the newsgroup FAQ of 2010-10-08, and the
annotations are distinct, being boxed and on a yellow background.

A would-be maintainer of a FAQ written in English does need to be able
to understand English - and you fail there, in addition to being ruled
out by Section 14.2.

I must disagree, Dr. Stockton. The first hurdle is to be willing to take on
the responsibility.

There certainly are other desirable characteristics; I suspect that
accuracy and completeness come before amiability when the requirements of
FAQ maintainer are examined objectively.

I suspect that any any perceived animosity newcomers might feel from Thomas
is simply due to his posting style. I suspect that in person he is of
average or superior amiability.

Sounds little bit like a non-solvable problem until someone will not
create FAQ from the scratch. I am pretty sure that everyone can create
something like "non-official comp.lang.javascript FAQ" or something similar.

The only official newsgroup FAQ, in any newsgroup, is the one regularly
posted to the newsgroup and discussed in that newsgroup.

That posting, and the daily posting of fragments, should cease, and that
document should be considered as historic rather than current (with its
beginning and end appropriately annotated). Copyright for the material
in it is morally protected and belongs to the newsgroup as a whole. But
we must remember that the stealing of resources is an essential part of
the American way of life.

There should be a weekly newsgroup posting of a new pseudo-FAQ,
maintained and updated with general newsgroup agreement, which ONLY
contains a description of itself and links with descriptions to other
places which contain reasonably well-maintained JavaScript material.

Any document of that description needs to contain a specific type of
material (and to say so) - material for newbies, reference material,
expert material, etc.
