Hello all,
I would like to announce the release of a new version of the
ECMAScript Support Matrix (ES-Matrix), available at
<http://PointedEars.de/es-matrix>
The ES-Matrix is an ongoing community-supported effort to document and
compare the features of widely distributed ECMAScript implementations,
currently:
* Netscape/Mozilla JavaScript (since 1995/1996 CE)
* Microsoft JScript (since 1996)
* Opera ECMAScript (since 1997)
* KDE JavaScript (since 2000)
* Apple/WebKit JavaScriptCore (since 2003/2005)
* Google V8 JavaScript (since 2008)
It enables developers of ECMAScript-based applications to improve the
compatibility, robustness, and efficiency of their code by adding feature
tests and fallbacks where they are considered necessary, and (re)moving
them where they are no longer (always) considered necessary.
Important changes to the previous version (baseline 2011-08-21, r54) are:
* Based on a novel, scientific approach: [1]
- Tests of more features of ECMAScript 3, 5 and beyond
(targeting full coverage)
- More thorough tests for availability and functionality of features
based on Specification algorithms (ES 5.1, usually non-strict mode)
- Easy maintenance of features and testcases
- Possibility for immediate feedback of test results (submit button)
- Persistent storage of test results
- Automatic invalidation of test results if testcases are modified
- Detailed results for versions of implementations and testcases
- Semi-automatic linking of environments to versions of
implementations
- Semi-automatic determination of safe features
- General applicability of the testing framework to similar areas
(like the DOM)
* Input control to filter features table by text or regular expression
* Improved readability by displaying feature details only on demand
(hovering of mouse pointer; to be completed)
* Detailed SVG timeline (tabular timeline removed for the time being)
* Updated version information and detection
* Uses HTML5 for semantic markup and microdata
* Lots of bugfixes
See the changelog, which is linked to on top of the Matrix, for details.
Constructive feedback is welcome.

Disclaimer: The website is down at the moment, and I am responding
from memory of what I saw last Friday.
I'm glad to see this has been updated, but I would like to see a
better display of the test code though. For the larger ones, the
tooltip is insufficient in size and cuts off the code.
I believe there are Mozilla JavaScript features missing from the table
still:
Object.__count__
Object.__parent__
Object.eval()
Sharp variables:
var a = #1 = { val:1, next:{val:2, next:#1#} };
Mind providing a link to your paper? I believe I am competent enough
in German to stumble through it.
Once the website comes back online, I'll take a longer look

This feature was removed in JavaScript 1.8.5 according to MDN, but I
can't find anything specific for when it was introduced. The closest I
can find is from a short exchange I had with Brenden:
<https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/es-discuss/2011-May/014744.html>
So it is pre-ES3 it seems.

Yes, unfortunately there appears to be a Web server problem. I am looking
into it.

Yes, I am aware of that.

ACK.

It was linked to in the footnote as
<http://PointedEars.de/scripts/test/es-matrix/application/doc/thesis.pdf>.
The URI is temporary as a translation into English and the production of
HTML versions are in progress.

We know that there was no problem with disk space or memory, which had been the reasons for server outages before, and the distribution still is Debian GNU/Linux *Stable*. -- PointedEars Twitter: @PointedEars2 Please do not Cc: me. / Bitte keine Kopien per E-Mail.

I don't recall the following existing in the table either. In legacy Mozilla JavaScript: arguments[-3] === arguments.callee arguments[-2] === arguments.length

We release SM standalone with > every Firefox ESR. There are no more JavaScript versions" I gathered as much from scanning the latest SpiderMonkey source this morning, trying to find out how to properly label the JavaScript versions from Firefox 6 on (there were no “New in JavaScript x.y.z” articles in MDN anymore, only “Firefox v for developers” articles with “JavaScript” sections). <http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/d2a7cfa34154/js/src/configure.in#l230> > I assume the matrix will begin to track browser versions now It already did (from Matrix v2 on) for JavaScript versions after 1.8.6 (Firefox 5.0.x). Should it turn out that the SpiderMonkey version corresponds with the Mozilla version now, so be it. That does not mean that the Matrix will be switched to browser versions. SpiderMonkey and other ECMAScript implementations still can be used outside of browsers. Another change will be to track JScript and JScript .NET versions in separate rows at least, as now there are both JScript 10.x and JScript .NET 10.x (previously, JScript versions were 5.x and 9.x, while JScript .NET versions were 7.x, 8.x and 10.x). -- PointedEars Twitter: @PointedEars2 Please do not Cc: me. / Bitte keine Kopien per E-Mail.
