No. I have not run across JavaScript use outside of a browser so
I wanted to know how people are using it outside of a browser. I
could easily imagine a use, but I wanted real data. I find that
asking works better than guessing.

… this approach will only work *reliably* if the function code uses only
features that are common to all relevant versions of all relevant server-
side and client-side ECMAScript implementations, and does not use any
features that depend on its runtime environment.
For example, if the function uses features only supported by
Netscape/Mozilla JavaScript (say, built for use on an NES-compatible Web
server that uses Rhino 1.7, with generators), then it cannot be used
verbatim on the client-side without forfeiting its functionality in software
that is not Mozilla-based, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, or Mozilla-
based software that is too old to support JavaScript 1.7, such as
Firefox 1.5.
Likewise, if the function depends on features native to JScript (say, it was
built for use with ASP on IIS, and for some reason depends on Conditional
Compilation) or not introduced before a specific version of JScript, then it
cannot be used verbatim on the client-side without forfeiting its
functionality in software that does not use Microsoft JScript, like Mozilla
Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and so on, and in versions of Internet
Explorer or Windows systems in general that do not support the required
JScript version.
Understanding these differences is important. It is why “Javascript” is a
misnomer; why I created, and why I am continuing to maintain the ECMAScript
Support Matrix, <http://PointedEars.de/es-matrix>.

So do you have a proposal for how to maintain the FAQ?
The current structure is a single XML document containing the entire
FAQ, using a JScript extract into the HTML FAQ and, I believe, a Perl
auto-poster for the daily posts. There is no current maintenance.
But I'm pretty certain that such maintenance as was most recently done
involved a single person updating that XML document. A sample portion
of that XML structure looks like this:
<CONTENT TITLE="What is the Document Object Model (DOM)?"
ID="dom" NUMID="2_9">
<P>The
<DFN>Document Object Model</DFN>
(DOM) is a interface-based model for
<ICODE>Document</ICODE>
objects. The DOM allows scripts to dynamically access and
update a document's content, style, and event handlers.
</P>
<P>The DOM is
<EM>not</EM>
part of the ECMAScript programming language.
</P>
<!-- ... -->
</CONTENT>
Thomas Lahn has proposed altering that XML to make it more useful, but
keeping the single document. He would replace the JScript with XSLT.
Maintenance would also involve a single maintainer, although opened up
to view via a Subversion repository. Presumably the auto-poster would
also be updated as necessary to match the XML changes.
My proposal would be to replace that XML with a collection of plain
text documents. I'm suggesting Markdown as a simpler-to-use format
for USENET posting, one which can easily be used to generate HTML for
the Web-based version. I am looking at using Javascript for both the
auto-poster and the generation of the static HTML FAQ. Maintenance
would be by a single person or a group. I'm proposing Github has the
mechanism to share changes to these files. I'm open to better
alternatives. My version of the above (in a file of its own) might
look something like this:
What is the Document Object Model (DOM)?
========================================
The _Document Object Model_ (DOM) is a interface-based model for
`Document` objects. The DOM allows scripts to dynamically access
and update a document's content, style, and event handlers.
The DOM is _not_ part of the ECMAScript programming language.
...
So do you have a choice among these suggestions, or a suggestion of
your own?

As a plain text file, used directly as the body of news postings, edited by whatever editor(s) the current maintainer currently chooses. For the Web, with a suitably configured server, the same as a *.TXT file like my <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/estralgs.txt> is served (its content might in part amuse you - or might not). <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/y2k_mfaq.txt> worked. If it is felt absolutely essential to prettify some part of what is seem, instead put that plain text in a PRE element with a minimum height of prettification above it. Alternatively, maintain as a very simple HTML file (i.e. one that *could* be described by a *VERY* simple DOCTYPE) linking to minimal CSS, and generate the *.TXT version by processing the HTML with JavaScript that we control -- and we do not complexify. Okay, so we have a third proposal, as well as the status quo. Thomas Lahn proposed something very much like the current XML structure, although perhaps with multiple documents. (It's still not clear to me if he means to have additional documents for supporting material or to make each entry it's own XML file, but that's another discussion.) I proposed multiple plain text files, structured using Markdown, one for each entry. Note that Markdown is a simple text format, patterned after such sources as email messages and USENET postings. A document formatted as a Markdown file is a readable plain-text representation that can also be easily translated into a meaningful subset of the standard HTML tag-set. > For the Web, with a suitably configured server, the same as a *.TXT file > like my <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/estralgs.txt> is served (its > content might in part amuse you - or might not). > > <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/y2k_mfaq.txt> worked. I, for one, find it much easier to read, and especially to navigate the current FAQ, <http://jibbering.com/faq/>. Turning this into a plain text document strikes me as a step backward. I also would be opposed to posting the full FAQ as a single post. I think the daily posting is a very good idea, with a link to the full FAQ. > Alternatively, maintain as a very simple HTML file (i.e. one that > *could* be described by a *VERY* simple DOCTYPE) linking to minimal CSS, > and generate the *.TXT version by processing the HTML with JavaScript > that we control -- and we do not complexify. I think that's significantly more complex than the reverse. > And we should get our energies back to discussing JavaScript here. Feel free. This thread certainly has stretched on. But I'm glad to see real effort finally being put into the FAQ after two years of stagnation. -- Scott

As I explained in my previous posting [1] already, each section of that FAQ has its own XML file already. Using the same approach, further division into one XML file for each subsection is easily possible. Without neither negating the existence of a one-document FAQ containing all sections nor the possibility to display only one section/subsection per document, and the possibility to post it or its sections/subsections separately and regularly in the newsgroup, as plain text. I've always found it easy to do document merging with XML. I've found it harder to split things up appropriately, often resorting to larger amounts of code for what should be a simple task. I'm sure there are good techniques that I never learned, but to me merging was always the easier side of this. -- Scott

I would definitely prefer the single document per FAQ entry/ subsection. Well, I have posted the URI of the (now) master XML resource, and explained
the approach I took for splitting up the data, for a reason. I have also
already said that there is a link in the generated FAQ document to the
changelog.
> I'm now supposing you mean the Subversion change log in the repository

What else. AISB, there is a link to the changelog *in* the “FAQ for
comp.lang.javascript”, and it is at the top of that generated document.
> Now I see better what you're doing.
Good.
> I assume it's different for you running these locally,
No, nothing is run separately anymore. While I do test locally, the HTML
document is generated *on the fly* from the XML data, by transforming XML
to HTML according to the templates defined in the XSLT stylesheet.
> but when I view the referenced `index.xml`, I see only the shell.
Whereas with “shell” I assume you mean the CONTENTS element. You could say
that is a bug in the XML view of browsers. I have seen it in Chromium 22.
<Ctrl>+<u> is your friend.
> The document entities are not resolved,
They are (wrongly), that is why no content is displayed.
> and the <CONTENTS> node is empty.
The index.xml resource is not intended to be viewed directly, it contains
just the *data*. It always has, only now most of the data is referenced
instead of included verbatim.

That does not mean that it should not also be available as daily items, weekly sections, or whatever. One benefit of a single document is that users can save it and scan it locally in a simple manner, for example to answer questions not indexed, such as "what examples, if any, of the ternary operator are present?" or even "What references to 'merlyn' are present?". Also, they can use DOS FC or better to see exactly what has changed since the last release, or since the last release that they saved, etc. One benefit of a plaintext document is being able to do such a compare in the semantic content alone, without also finding HTML/style/CSS alterations to the prettiness. The maintainers could also post in News a "Before and After" for any part where presented code has changed or there has been significant alteration to the text. -- (c) John Stockton, nr London UK Reply address via Home Page. news:comp.lang.javascript FAQ <http://www.jibbering.com/faq/index.html>. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-index.htm> jscr maths, dates, sources. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/> TP/BP/Delphi/jscr/&c, FAQ items, links.

I don't see a reason to post the full thing to News, but if there is a consensus to do so I wouldn't object, so long as the shorter daily postings also continue. > One benefit of a single document is that users can save it and scan it > locally in a simple manner, for example to answer questions not indexed, > such as "what examples, if any, of the ternary operator are present?" or > even "What references to 'merlyn' are present?". Although it's slightly easier to do that with a text document, a copy- and-paste from the HTML document on Jibbering would serve much the same purpose. > Also, they can use DOS FC or better to see exactly what has changed > since the last release, or since the last release that they saved, etc. > > One benefit of a plaintext document is being able to do such a compare > in the semantic content alone, without also finding HTML/style/CSS > alterations to the prettiness. > > The maintainers could also post in News a "Before and After" for any > part where presented code has changed or there has been significant > alteration to the text. All three of these possibilities would be made significantly stronger with powerful diff tools embedded in a version-control system such as git. That was part of the reason I was suggesting GitHub. -- Scott

How will accessibility be reduced? There are no images, no multi-media
areas (video or audio) there is no Flash Player required. There isn't
even any JavaScript on the page (except for code examples).
As I understand it - the source files will be plain text using
markdown syntax. When viewed as a web page the markdown syntax is
converted to html elements. The CSS is required to format the text.
The only accessibility problems that I can see is, if for some strange
reason, there was a use of a crazy colour scheme.
Having a look at the faq.css file that is used to format the current
FAQ - I would vote to keep this same styling.
BTW: you own home page fails the WAI Level 1 test with 115 errors.

What a load of croc. Open a plain text file in your browser then do

It matters little if good advice is a little pedantic or hurts peoples feelings along the way. Professional advice (like Thomas Lahn provides for free) is extremely beneficial to the group. If the group can't agree (it seems they may never), then Matt McDonald's suggestion makes sense.
