Well he's a geek, isn't he, and it's well known that geeks are childish.
The phrase "idiot savant" comes to mind.

General questions, my answers:

Do we need a maintainer who tries to please everyone? NO
And does so even if detrimental to his job? MORE SO NO

Do we strongly object to a maintainer that has his own ideas? NO
Do we object to a maintainer posting such ideas? NO

Do we object to a maintainer that includes his ideas against the consensus
in the NG? YES

Do we want a maintainer who has a more than reasonable knowledge of code?
YES

Do we want a maintainer who keeps us sharp, even if that includes
arrogance? YES

So I VOTE for PE, if he abides for the FAQ, at least where available, to
the consensus in the NG, however objectionable his postings[!] may be to
some or many.

All, but the worst, programmers are idiots, childish, enthousiasts,
arrogant individualists and/or specialists in some code-subjects while
understandably ignorant of others, we are just like the somewhat better
part of humanity.

This NG is NOT a religious sect, where agreement is paramount and
dissenting voices are to be shunned.

Full ACK (to all of the above).

And I like to add another question/answer:

Do we want this newsgroup's FAQ to be maintained? -- *yes*

|
| Here is how I would like this to work for a start:
|
| - Glaringly obvious errors I will fix by myself. (But you are welcome to
| point them out to me anyway. See below.)
|
| - In order to keep the number of discussions in the newsgroup on this FAQ
| to a minimum (like someone here said so aptly, “Let's discuss
| JavaScript!”), I am going to
|
| * search the newsgroup for <FAQENTRY> sections, and past postings as
|     free time permits;
|
|   * read follow-ups to FAQ postings;
|
| * welcome your suggestions for improvement via e-mail; to my Reply-To

|
| * select a collection of suggestions for discussion in the newsgroup, on

| informed decision based on those discussions. (Because given the
| length of and diversity in this thread already, I seriously doubt it
| will be possible to do this in a reasonable way based on group

|
| […]
|
| - Although the copyright statement of the current FAQ is ambiguous to say
| the least, as Patricia pointed out, I have no intention of infringing
| copyright. Those who would like their contributions to be removed from
| that FAQ may request that. However, the burden of proof lies with the
| person requesting removal of content.
`----

(To which you replied only “Drop dead.”)

So if you think you have made a considerable contribution to the original
FAQ, and do not want it in the new FAQ, you can request removal of that
content under those terms. We will then just have to get along without your
help.

On the other hand, if you think this newsgroup needs an up-to-date,
factually correct FAQ, for once you could do something *constructive* and
support a good cause. If you are willing to start communicating in a
civilised manner, I am willing to let bygones be bygones, and would
appreciate any suggestions you may have.

No, your persistent complaining betrays your ignorance of the fact that you
are within a (hacker) subculture here which, necessarily, has its own rules
and jargon that is practised by the people who are also within that
subculture, and who define it by their mere presence and personality. And
that, unfortunately, you are not getting the pun.

That is particularly curious as you appear to be even more fond than me of
using acronyms from that very jargon (“YSCIB”, “KETFOB”, and so on).

If you think you are a hacker, would you like to go away and do it
somewhere else. Personally I prefer the company of mature people.

Apparently you have been deceived by the mass media as to what a hacker is.
You should read the referred material to clarify that misconception.

Of course you are free to do with your site as you please, but JFTR and
JFYI:

I am not amused.

In 2010 you quit, more precisely, you *abandoned* maintenance of the FAQ
(that is, quitting before a successor was named). As a result, it had gone
unmaintained and unfixed for more than 2 years.

My e-mail to you in March 2011 in which I asked you for advice on FAQ
maintainence has gone unanswered.

December 2012 you were among those who publicly agreed that I should become
the new maintainer:

<https://twitter.com/xkit/status/275859437732896768>

Following that vote of confidence, I have put considerable effort into
devising a way to make this work –

<news:2715826.m0UDekTA75@PointedEars.de>

<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.lang.javascript/yvxh6sd5deU/OVlYGsRKIIYJ>

– and into hosting a FAQ on my site with the goal of becoming the new FAQ:

<http://PointedEars.de/faq>

I have received *no* suggestions for improvements so far over the designated
channels, especially not by you.

I know I have not been overly busy there (but elsewhere instead), however
I have already made some improvements on my own:

<http://PointedEars.de/websvn/log.php?repname=FAQs&path=%2Ftrunk%2Fcljs%2F&isdir=1&showchanges=1>

Do you think it is fair play to push the reset button on me now, just by
popping back after two years of virtual absence?

Not good. You cannot be trusted, since you chose to abandon the
position of FAQ maintainer without first finding a suitable replacement
and doing a final clean-up edit of at least the opening and closing
parts.

FAQ maintaining should be a gift of effort to the community, by the
maintainer or his employer; it should not be a paid job of itself.

It should also be done by someone smarter than you.

Lahn wanted it but there was not consensus. I tried to recruit a few folks who wouldn't take it. ANd so nobody took it.

Apparently you are unaware that in English (and Western civilization in
general) it is considered impolite to refer to a person by their standalone
surname. The proper reference would be “Mr. Lahn” (with or without period),
“Thomas Lahn”, “Thomas ‘PointedEars’ Lahn” (all unusual in Usenet where
people go by the less formal “you can say you to me” paradigm, unless
misconduct is to be indicated; but the latter may still be considered polite
if used for disambiguation); preferably “Thomas” or “PointedEars” (both are
common in Usenet). To me, abbreviations like “TL”, “PE”, or (if need be)
“TPEL” are acceptable as well.

Your knowledge about Western civilization seems to be strikingly
limited, to put it politely. The style of such references is heavily
language- and culture-dependent, and also contextual.

Anyone who posts such requirements in a discussion group, without the
slightest connection to the topic of the group, surely deserves to be
referred to as a troll or a disturber.

On the other hand, such pointless self-centered posts are a useful
reminder: anything posted by “PointedEars” should be read with
suspicion, even when it looks like being on-topic and occasionally even
correct (though virtually always pointlessly long and in lecturing style).

I would add personal preference to the list as well.

My father is often referred to by his closest friends as "Duffy". They
mean no disrespect, and he does not mind it in the least.

Perhaps Canadians are an exeption to Thomas' perception of such
objections being universal in Western civilization.

It is very common for mass media organizations to abbreviated names in
this manner. Likely this practice has origins in hardcopy newsprint
headlines where space is at a premium.

Probably it would not be a good idea at family gatherings. And it can be
confusing sometimes if the surname is a common word. (Best, Day, Hunt,
May, Quick, Ray, Wild, Wise, Wood, Young, etc.)

Another possible objection I can see are people with titles, who might
feel that the omission of the title has been deliberate because the
speaker/author feels that the title is undeserved:

"Obama" vs. "President Obama"
"McCartney" vs. "Sir Paul McCartney"
"Stockton" vs. "Dr. Stockton"

In any case, Thomas is (as usual) being meticulous by asking Jucca if he
has a specific objection to being referred to as "Korpela".

It's a lot more subtle than you realise.

If you are upper or upper middle class talking to a member of the same
class such as Bertie Wooster then it's polite to say Wooster, but you
can say Bertie if you are a friend or one of his ferocious aunts.

However if you are talking to a member of a lower class such as the
greengrocer Fred Jones then it is impolite to say Jones, polite to say
Mr Jones. (The stop as in Mr. is usually omitted these days.)

But if you are talking to your butler or your valet such as Jeeves
then it is normal to use just the surname.

Thank you very much for the clarification indeed. However, in
“(comp.lang.)javascript” there are no classes.  Neither are there in Usenet;
As I indicated, this is a meritocracy instead, and that is reflected by
using rather informal language.

While I realize that it is probably more common in the United Kingdom (and
in monarchies in general), I consider thinking based on social classes
obsolete in real life.  Some may consider that a part of their tradition;
I consider it just demeaning. A person should be appreciated for their
contributions to society, not for the circumstances into which they were
born. Have not (civil) wars been fought, and people died, in order to
abolish social status based on birthright once and for all?

Pinhead, it is naive of you to presume that anyone would wish to be
polite to you, since you are so frequently extremely rude, albeit
without common vulgarity, to others.

In any case, we commonly refer to Germans by their unadorned surnames :
Haendel, Bach, Hegel, Marx, Pachelbel, Wagner, Goebbels, Duerer,
Adenauer, Bismarck, Doenitz, Bunsen, Diesel, Einstein, Planck, Luther,
Clausewitz, Rommel, Gutenberg, ...

... 'Western civilization' exists. That's a forgivable mistake, though,
I clearly remember that I was rather naive about it as well before I
read your various contributions to this group.

There have been some developments concerning the FAQ since you left. If
you haven't been following the group, this thread contains the most
recent discussion (I think):

https://groups.google.com/d/topic/comp.lang.javascript/yvxh6sd5deU

I've decided to stay out of FAQ related discussions.

Wait a minute, I don't get the fundraiser thing. I thought you needed to
buy your old domain back from some domain grabber (in which case I would
have recommended to leave them in the dirt and register a new domain),
but... dhtmlkitchen.com is still registered to you, and has been since 2001.
So what's stopping you from resurrecting your old site, and why would
you need financial support to do it? Is it just the hosting?
