I'm pretty old too - does that make me obsolete or more experienced.  :)

vim/gvim was built on vi because of its efficiency in key strokes I would
imagine.  When I first looked at emacs there seemed to be longer sequences
to get things done.  Can't comment on the newer editors.  The portability
of vim/emacs was a major issue for me since you can hop from platform to
platform seamlessly.  And gvim, for one, is still being enhanced regularly.
