My guess at it would be something where the range was restricted to 
positive integers (e.g., array index), thus a negative number

Nah, you just need a different programming paradigm.  I can, for 
example, easily define a function that returns a maximum prime number, 
but it’ll just be the maximum that had been calculated at the time 
the function was called.
