If I'm not mistaken, it is the bug reported in
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170727> (see Comment 1 and
5). A leading dot is only duplicated in messages downloaded for offline
reading. So I switched to online reading, what works fine.
