null variable issue???

This is the line. Can't I use...&& to stop this from returning null

return (E.Util.ieVersion() < 9 ? a.caller : a.caller.caller);

I know this is wrong, but something like....

return (E.Util.ieVersion() < 9 ? &&a.caller : &&a.caller.caller);
