Using etymology of a word to define present day meaning nuances is silly.
The original Latin meaning of "demandare" was "give in trust/commission", 
where "ask" was "poscere".

And indeed present day "ask" can be used in an obligatory form,
for instance if such asking is done by someone in power,
but "demand" cannot be used in a non-obligatoy one.  

Even a "polite demand" promises dire consequences when not fulfilled.

"Demanding an answer to a Q" on this NG is terribly impolite,
as this Javascript NG is not a paid helpdesk,
and rudeness would certainly not be answered,
but for obvious misuse by some French people, 
who are obviously just erroring languagewize,
and should be corrected forthwith.
