So there is only 1 ajax call at a time, so no closures are necessary.

The lines of PHP are off topic, they have nothing to do with the Ajax calls 
in the snese that ajax calles are initiatedd clientside.

"16,000 lines of JavaScript" if this is clientside,
I would say that asks for troubles.
