But, as I said, it is incorrect to call the proprietary “innerHTML” property
“the practical choice”; that is the result of short-sighted reasoning as the
OP explicitly wanted to change the *text content* of the element. Compare
the result of
el.textContent = "<strong>foo & bar</strong>";
with that of
el.innerHTML = "<strong>foo & bar</strong>";
